I nominate this for deletion because it is a screenshot of proprietary software, Mac OS and Windows 7, and Commons images from Category:VirtualBox can serve as a free equivalent because they use free operating systems and the base software is also free software, so the nominated file fails WP:NFCC#1. User:Jasper Deng has stated: "Even when using Linux distributions to demonstrate it, this software still contains copyrighted code (especially the extensions pack) and thus no free image can be made of it, unless we use a very old version of VirtualBox that does not accurately reflect the software itself." I don't consider this an argument for keeping the image, yet. Instead, if true, it would mean that all VirtualBox screenshots on the Commons should be nominated for deletion. If all that happened and no free image could exist, the argument "virtualization of Windows on Mac OS is the bigger usage" may be worthwhile but I'm not convinced and until then we should use the equivalent that appears to be free. Hekerui (talk) 11:41, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Is there some kind of restriction imposed through the operating system licenses which prevents licensees from taking screen shots and publicize them? Is there any reason to believe that this image is non-free? --Useerup (talk) 18:34, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Yes. If the software is copyrighted, we have to be careful about infringing that. We try to avoid such screenshots, in general, if we can avoid it. Jasper Deng (talk) 05:44, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete I think that it can be replaced by a screenshot of Linux on Linux or anything similar. The Virtual Box menus would probably only be de minimis. For software screenshot restrictions, see {{non-free software screenshot}} and {{Microsoft screenshot}}. --Stefan2 (talk) 18:38, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Keep: VirtualBox's most accurate representation is something like this. I would have this image deleted however, if someone could get a screenshot of Linux on Windows or Windows on Linux. Jasper Deng (talk) 19:01, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]- Delete fails fair use. Easily replaceable by a free image of FOSS Operating systems --Chris Ssk talk 20:12, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- VirtualBox has closed-source components as part of its extension pack, which only affects its most recent versions (see the article). Older versions may or may not be able of having free screenshots depending on whether they are the OSE or not. Jasper Deng (talk) 01:38, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep or Modify - As this is a current screenshot, it reflects the software in its current state demonstrating a notable feature - 3D accelleration. If however this is not possible due to licensing, a screenshot of linux on linux would be just as accurate. NotinREALITY 03:36, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- This kind of 3D acceleration is only new for Windows; 3D acceleration for Linux has been there for quite some time. Jasper Deng (talk) 04:37, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- As this is a new feature, is it not suitable to have a screenshot that reflects this? Would it be possible to resize the image to a thumbnail as is done for other OS X and Windows screenshots? NotinREALITY 05:12, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That'll be up to the original uploader.Resizing would help the likelihood of this image being kept, so let's do it. Jasper Deng (talk) 05:16, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]- Permission isnt an issue, I will upload a smaller version. - UPDATE - I have uploaded a low resolution sample of this image , so this image may now be deleted. Any objections to me reverting the current image to the low res sample?
- (edit conflict) (3 times) No objections. Go ahead. Jasper Deng (talk) 05:55, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- RESOLVED - I believe this matter is now resolved, this image may be deleted. Thankyou for all of your contributions. NotinREALITY 05:58, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Delete this image because a low-res replacement has been uploaded. If anyone objects to the new image, start a separate discussion. Jasper Deng (talk)06:00, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- The dispute is about image content, not resolution. I added the newly uploaded image to this discussion so we get a resolution on the issue at hand. I think the image should be deleted regardless of resolution, because old VirtualBox version screenshots exists and can be used. Hekerui (talk) 09:12, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete this one because it is orphaned and delete File:Lowres vbox sc.png because it is replaceable. --Stefan2 (talk) 12:19, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- No, it's not replaceable because Windows Aero support can only be demonstrated by a Windows screenshot (although the Mac OS X part can go). Jasper Deng (talk) 18:10, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Why is Windows Aero support relevant? If it has anything to do with the 3D stuff discussed above, it is replaceable by a similar GUI for Linux. --Stefan2 (talk) 19:39, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- There was always support for Linux GUIs (since something like version 2), so that's not a new feature. Windows Aero support is a big characteristic of any virtualization software. Jasper Deng (talk) 20:41, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I think that is something that can be imparted by words alone. Hekerui (talk) 21:00, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- A picture, literally here, is worth a thousand words. Jasper Deng (talk) 23:00, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- If you are suggesting that a recent update to Virtualbox enabled a certain feature in Windows but that the same kind of feature has been available in Linux for much longer, this may be something for a criticism section as textual information but it is certainly not needed in the infobox. --Stefan2 (talk) 23:14, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- The discussion here is about the image in question, and was due to its violation of fair use. This violation was resolved by replacing it with a 'web resolution' image thas is claimed to comply with said regulation. NotinREALITY 08:59, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- The problem is that Linux on Linux does not adequately demonstrate the whole purpose of VirtualBox. Linux on Linux is absolutely pointless and I believe is only a fringe usage of VirtualBox.Jasper Deng (talk) 23:30, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Different Linux distributions can still be incomatible and VirtualBox can show usage of both - and, most importantly, it can be done with free operating systems. If we can demonstrate a function with free software, the non-free use rationale is not persuasive anymore. Hekerui (talk) 07:19, 1 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Furthermore, Linux is not the only free operating system. A few days ago, I created File:FreeDOS on QEMU on Linux.png (WARNING! Wrong virtualisation software – not usable here) because a screenshot showing that combination was needed elsewhere. FreeDOS, FreeBSD or any other free operating system could be used instead. --Stefan2 (talk) 22:45, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- This raises another problem. given wikipedia's efforts toward 'user readability', does two linux operating systems have any relavance to the standard user? does it not suit the purpose better to demonstrate the two leading operating systems (in terms of market share) in this context? Please see Wikipedia NFCC #8 - 'Contextual significance. Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding'. NotinREALITY 08:48, 1 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- The purpose of this piece of software is to be able to run some operating system on top of some (usually different) operating system. A demonstration of this with two free operating systems would give the same understanding as a demonstration of this with two unfree operating systems, with the difference that the image would be free. --Stefan2 (talk) 22:45, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- For a CLI-based OS, that would not work as a guest because we need to distinguish from a simple DOS emulator. I've only sporadically ever seen VirtualBox used on a CLI environment (because not many people with that kind of host use VirtualBox). I think NotinREALITY's comment is valid, therefore, because the average user expects VirtualBox to be used to run Windows/Linux on top of OS X/Linux/Windows (except Linux on Linux or Windows on Windows, unless the Windows versions are different).Jasper Deng (talk) 22:56, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- For whatever it is worth, Commons:Category:VirtualBox has plenty of useful screenshots. If you want an example of a screenshot where the host OS is different from the guest OS, I have created the file File:FreeDOS on VirtualBox on Linux.png for this purpose (easy since I still had the installation files). I'm not sure what the difference is between VirtualBox and a "simple DOS emulator"; DOS programs send signals directly to system hardware, so a "simple DOS emulator" must emulate all hardware, i.e., a "simple DOS emulator" must implement the features of VirtualBox, although it could be limited to handling operating systems running on ancient hardware. Programs such as DOSBox can be used as a virtualisation program, although only ancient OSes might work. --Stefan2 (talk) 23:47, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- My point. We don't want to give readers the impression it's another DOSBox-like program.Jasper Deng (talk) 23:48, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- But it is "another DOSBox-like program" in that it virtualises hardware. The only difference is that DOSBox exclusively virtualises old hardware and that it comes with a built-in DOS emulator. --Stefan2 (talk) 23:59, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- We still want to show that VirtualBox isn't the same.Jasper Deng (talk) 00:18, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Virtualbox doesn't emulate anything. The difference between emulation and virtualization is massive. Virtualbox passes hardware calls to the physical hardware, not to emulated hardware, here lies the difference. and as I said before, in the context of virtualbox, most people would find a mac/windows screenshot of more value than a linux/linux one, proven by the fact that not even my lecturer understood the linux/linux one. Given this value, under Wikipedia NFCC #8 this image is permitted use. NotinREALITY 07:01, 6 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Second, although text alone can convey Aero support in VirtualBox, (Clause 8) another image in this very same article is already showing Aero support. (Clauses 8 and 3.) Third, this image is showing redundant copyright-protected assets of others (such as Steam or Microsoft Office icons) that can by no means be excused. Please take note that it is possible to show Windows Aero support in a free image by taking the screenshot of a free Windows program. Technically it is replaceable, but we don't have easy access to one. Jasper Deng (talk) 20:21, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Is that a Windows-only feature? If so, keeping is probably necessary. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:17, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I'm just wondering, isn't it a bit difficult to see that the left Firefox is the Debian version? Sure, you can zoom in to see the word "Iceweasel" and there are some very minor GUI differences, but they might not be very obvious. Wouldn't it be more illustrative to pick two programs where the OS differences are more prominent? Running two different versions of Firefox on the same computer concurrently works fine, for example if you use the
-no-remote
and-P
flags to the Firefox executable. I don't think that Windows menus and contents are de minimis because it seems to be an important aspect of the image that it is Windows. --Stefan2 (talk) 10:06, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]- Yeah, this picture is not the best representation; Windows XP on Linux would be a better demonstration of this.Jasper Deng (talk) 22:58, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned to File:Cottagecheese200px.jpg, as well as the other items in the Commons Category "Cottage Cheese". This has a brand name while the others do not. Sven Manguard Wha? 23:44, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
