From today's featured articleThe Packers sweep is an American football play popularized in the 1960s by Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi. It is a variation on the sweep, in which a back takes a pitch or hand-off from the quarterback and runs parallel to the line of scrimmage. This allows the offensive linemen (usually the guards) and the fullback to block defenders before the runner turns upfield. According to one estimate, the Packers sweep gained an average of 8.3 yards (7.6 m) per attempt in its first three seasons. Lombardi built his offensive game plan around running it, or threatening to run it. His teams of the 1960s won five National Football League Championships and the first two Super Bowls. Five offensive players from these teams were later elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Lombardi was elected shortly after his death in 1971. (Full article...)
