Welcome to the ninth Bugle for 2020!

To start with some important news, nominations for the 2020/2021 coordinator election are open. Information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting will begin on 15 September. There is also a nomination for Coordinator Emeritus which, unlike the general coordinator election, is open for voting now.

Turning to this edition of the Bugle, the regular article news section features many new FAs and A-class articles, as well as two interesting new featured pictures on topics relevant to the Arab-Israeli conflict. Nick-D, who handles the new A-class article blurbs, was worried that there wouldn't be many for this month, but a wave of promotions in late August solved that problem!

Nick has also provided a review essay on his experiences visiting a surprisingly large and interactive aviation museum in a regional Australian city during August. While playing soldiers is unattractive, there's much to be said for museums like this which provide military historians with an opportunity to gain some hands-on experience with military hardware. The regular book reviews section includes a round-up of reviews published elsewhere, with this month's edition featuring reviews from a particularly diverse range of publications and a slightly different format.

Welcome to CSJJ104 and Johncdraper who joined the project in August. Please feel free to reach out to any member of the project if you have any questions at all.

Your editors, Ian Rose (talk) and Nick-D (talk)

Milestones

Two huge naval Good Topics were promoted in August, the 47-article Battleships of France, and even more impressive, the 63-article Pre-dreadnought battleships of the Royal Navy. These two are largely the work of Parsecboy and Sturmvogel 66, although others have contributed. Well done to everyone who helped put these together!

While he isn't a member of the project, we'd like to congratulate Adam Cuerden on having his 500th Featured picture promoted. Many of the 423 featured pictures that form part of this project have been restored by Adam.

Gog the Mild recently passed the significant milestone of 150 Good Article nomination reviews. Thanks for all your contributions to our quality assessment processes!

A special congratulations to Hog Farm on being awarded their first A-Class Medal. We are sure it is the first of many.

Awards and honours

Contest department

  • The August round of the article improvement contest attracted nine participants, with 65 articles being improved. First place went to Sturmvogel 66 with 182 points from 23 articles and they were awarded the Wikichevrons. Parsecboy came second with 72 points from 7 articles, for which they received the Writer's Barnstar. Also scoring were Djmaschek, Gog the Mild, Harrias, Hog Farm, Lineagegeek, Peacemaker67 and Zawed. Congratulations and thanks to all participants. You can self-assess up to C-class for the contest, but B-class assessments need to be done by another editor. This is best organised by posting at WP:MHAR. Make sure to add your entries for the September contest as soon as they are promoted, this allows time for them to be checked progressively.
