From Middle Low German bevrien and German befreien. Cognate with Danish befri, Norwegian Bokmål befri, Yiddish באַפֿרײַען (bafrayen), Middle Dutch bevrien, older Dutch bevrijen, now bevrijden, West Frisian befrije, Old English befrēoġan, Middle English *befreen, *bifreen and English befree. Equivalent to be- +‎ fri +‎ -a or be- +‎ fria.
