From Middle Low German bekreften or German bekräften (rare, more often bekräftigen), from Middle High German bekreften. Equivalent of be- +‎ kraft +‎ -a. The synonym bekräftiga went out of use during the 17th century. Cognate with Danish bekræfte, Norwegian Bokmål bekrefte and Norwegian Nynorsk bekrefte, bekrefta.
