The ounce (avoirdupois[note 1]) is a unit of mass ("weight") equal to 116 of a pound or about 28 g.[note 2][1] The ounce is herein abbreviated as oz. When converting a recipe to metric, it is usually sound to make the following approximations.

1 oz 30 to 32 g
2 oz 60 to 65 g
3 oz 90 to 95 g
4 oz 120 to 125 g
6 oz 180 to 190 g
8 oz 240 to 250 g
10 oz 300 to 320 g
12 oz 360 to 375 g
16 oz 480 to 500 g

Notes

[edit | edit source]
  1. Note that the ounce avoirdupois is distinct from the fluid ounce, the troy ounce and apothecaries ounce, the latter two are not used in cooking.
  2. 1 oz = 28.349523125 g exactly
