Ian Edmondson was the news editor at the News of the World and was suspended on 5 January 2011 for being implicated in the News of the World phone hacking affair.[1][2] He was sacked the same month.
Mr Edmondson was hired to the News of the World editorial crew by Neil Wallis, who was Andy Coulson's deputy editor at the in November 2004 and Mr Coulson promoted Mr Edmondson to assistant editor of the news department in October 2005. [3]
He was allegedly one of Mr Coulson's inner circle of executives when Mr Coulson was editor of the paper, according to a former reporter from the News of the World.[3]
As the assistant editor of the news section, he was part of a clique of senior ranking staff that discussed 'high grade' and sensitive news stories privately after the official editorial meetings had taken place.[3]
He was reported to have been privy to most of the big scoops the paper published each week. His News of the World ex-colleague was the paper's former royal editor, Clive Goodman which accused of produceing some news scoops that involved paying the private detective Glenn Mulcaire to hacking in to mobile phones belonging to leading public figures.[3]
