Article

Helter Skelter (song)

Portion used

A short section sufficient to identify the work concerned, or to aid in critical commentary of the work.

Low resolution?

The sample is of sufficient quality for commentary and identification, but its quality is reduced from the original. Copies made from it will be of inferior quality, unsuitable for "unauthorised distribution" or other uses that would compete with the commercial purpose of the original recording.

Purpose of use

This song has been described as "the sound of heavy metal music before the genre got its name", featuring a "throbbing machine rhythm" and a chorus with "a juggernaut run on guitar ... skittering down the scale" each time Paul McCartney "bellows" the words "Helter Skelter". (Source: Gould, Jonathan (2008), Can't Buy Me Love: The Beatles, Britain and America. Piatkus. ISBN 978-0-7499-2988-6, p. 520.) The sample presents part of verse one, illustrating the "throbbing machine rhythm", leading into the start of the first chorus where the "bellowing" and "juggernaut guitar runs" can be heard. Words alone are inadequate to describe the song, and presenting the sound of this song alongside earlier and later ones is necessary for a complete understanding of its nature and its contrast with material from other periods, and hence of the way the band's music evolved during their career..

Replaceable?

As a sample from a copyrighted musical recording, the sample is not replaceable by free content; any other sample from the same recording would also be copyrighted, and any version that is not true to the original would be inadequate for identification or commentary.
