Other time period maps?

[edit]

Shouldn't there be maps for the years of 1812,1859, and 1867? If that is so could someone edit those maps on. 198.236.185.1 (talk) 22:57, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Article title

[edit]

There is a difference of opinion on whether or not this article should be titled "Austrian Empire" or "Empire of Austria". I don't have an opinion on this potential change but thought I'd start a discussion section so there won't be any chance of edit warring and there is a space for editors to weigh in on which title they believe is more appropriate. I just think it's basically the same name, that any scholarly use of "Austrian Empire" can be regarded as interchangeable (probably just for purely formulaic ease of reference), and that therefore we should just favor the official name. Again, it's the same thing: going down the COMMONNAME rabbit hole is kind of pointless in this particular dilemma.
If one were to go into more detail one could point out that "Austrian Empire" would be utterly unacceptable as an official name of the country at the time, as it would have indicated the "Empire" is that of the "Austrian" nation (i.e. "Empire of the Austrians"), analogous with French liberal/nationalist naming convention at the time (République/Empire Français). "Empire/Kingdom of [LAND]" was the more conservative formulation at the time, as opposed to "[LAND/NATION] Empire". The Empire of Austria was, of course, the epitome of arch-conservativism and anti-nationalism in Europe.
For some additional context along those lines I'd point to the Orléaniste/nationalist renaming of the French royal title to "King of the French" (Roi des Français), as opposed to the conservative "King of France", and to the bitter argument between Bismarck and Kaiser Wilhelm I as to whether he should be the "German Emperor" or "Emperor of Germany" (the Kaiser preferred the latter, more conservative formulation).
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, our project's use of "Austrian Empire" creates a lot of unnecessary confusion as to the actual formal name of this relatively obscure, but important polity. And old Franz's wig would flip if he saw it :) Director (talk) 18:02, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Successor being the North German Confederation

[edit]

The North German Confederation did not detach or annex any territories from the Austrian Empire, how did it succeed it? Sandjaar (talk) 19:28, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. I will remove North German Confederation from the infobox. Edwardx (talk) 10:52, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
