The following letter was advertised for sale. I believe Sir John Lavery was president, in 1933, of the Royal Academy of Art. I infer that it had been proposed to exhibit a picture of Hitler at the Royal Academy and that the Jewish portraitist Flora Lion was enlisting her influential colleagues to put a stop to it. Can anyone shed more light on the incident and the outcome of the special Council meeting? Fishface.

BIRLEY, Sir Oswald (1880-1952). Painter. Autograph Letter Signed to fellow-artist Flora Lion, 1 page 4to, The Corner House, 62 Wellington Road, 20 November 1933. Discussing a portrait of Hitler, explaining that he has talked to Sir John Lavery about it and that a special Council meeting has been called, prior to which it will not be exhibited. £75 [No: 7621]

Dear Mrs. Flora Lion

I had a talk with Sir John Lavery about this Hitler portrait after our talk on the telephone.
He has no wish to upset anyone & is calling a special Council meeting to consider it & of course there can be no question of this picture being exhibited before the meeting takes place.

                     I am ?/ Oswald Birley
