The History of the Internet

The Internet is a global computer network which contains a variety of information and communication facilities , consisting of interconnected networks using standardised communication protocols.

The 80's

Major development on the Internet happened during the 1980's.

In 1980, the ENQUIRE software was introduced. This allowed scientists to keep track of people, software, and projects by using hyperlinks. This software was launched by the European Organisation for Nuclear Research.

In 1982 was when the first emotican was used by Scott Fahlman.

On January 1st, 1983, ARPANET computers switched over to TCP/IP.

In 1984, the Domain Name System was created. It's aim was to make addresses on the Internet more user friendly, compared to the already existing numerical IP address. Internet users were now able to type in easily remembered domain names, which would then automatically convert to an IP address.

By 1987 nearly 30,000 hosts were on the internet. The ARPANET software could only hod 1,000 but since the adoption of the TCP/IP system, a much larger number of hosts could be on it.

In 1988 the Internet Rely Chat (IRC) was developed. The instant messaging programmes that we use today stem from IRC.

The proposal for the World Wide Web was written up in 1989, by Tim Lee Berners. Ir was first published on the March issue of MacWorld, but then re-distributed in May 1990.
