College freshman Angie Baxter, an aspiring doctor is working as a candy striper at Pine Valley Hospital when she meets Jesse Hubbard (Darnell Williams) -- the nephew of Doctor Frank Grant. The duo immediately clashes due to their differences, but they also share a mutual attraction and soon start dating. As Angie successfully convinces her friend Jenny Gardner (Kim Delaney) to be with her true love Greg Nelson (Laurence Lau), her relationship with Jesse faces tremendous pressure when Jesse goes on the run after he is accused of raping Liza Colby (Marcy Walker). Though Angie insist Jesse is innocent, her father Les Baxter (Antonio Fargas) isn't Jesse's biggest fan. Liza soon confesses to lying allowing Jesse to return home and resume the romance. When Angie reveals she is saving herself for marriage, Jesse proposes marriage and they elope in April 1983. Realizing they aren't ready for marriage, they separate only for Angie to learn she's pregnant. Angie tries to hide the pregnancy only to confess to her mother Pat (Lee Chamberlin) who encourages her to tell Jesse. While she doesn't tell him she is already pregnant, Angie ask Jesse how he feels about children and he says he isn't ready. Angie then files for divorce and arranges to put the child up for adoption. Upon giving birth to her son in October 1983, Angie suddenly changes her mind and confesses all to Jesse only to learn that her father has already gone forward with the adoption plans. They kidnap their son and name him Frankie after Jesse's uncle and rewed in December 1983. Narrowly escaping kidnapping charges, the couple settles into their new life but struggle to make ends meet. In 1984, the Hubbards decide to invest a nightclub with Greg and Jenny. However, they lose their stake in the club when Murray whom Jesse had borrowed money from comes to collect. As Jesse embarks on a singing career, Angie continues studying at PCU and becomes suspicious of Jesse's closeness to his duet partner, Yvonne Caldwell (Vanessa Bell Calloway). Angie is further unsettled by the arrival of Jesse's half-brother Eugene (Tom Wright) fearing Eugene may drag Jesse back into his old habits. Meanwhile, Angie's professor, John Voight tries to seduce her and she rejects him but is afraid to come forward. However, when Voight threatens her grades, Angie confesses also and eventually graduates with honors. Unbeknownst to Angie, Eugene and Yvonne are working to break up her marriage. A furious Angie puts Jesse out of the house when she learns of his affair with Yvonne. However, they reconcile after discovering Eugene and Yvonne's schemes and run them out of town. Yvonne resurfaces to announce she is pregnant with Jesse's child and Angie takes pity on her. Angie's compassion leads to Yvonne confessing that she and Jesse never slept together after all and Yvonne decides put the baby up for adoption. Yvonne changes her mind but the child has been sold on the black market. Jesse uncovers a black marketing baby ring being operated by a criminal known as "Mr. Big" -- all are shocked when it is revealed to be Les. Angie witnesses Jesse and Les struggle over a gun which culminates in her father's death. Haunted by her father's death, Angie and Jesse briefly separate again. Angie soon befriends widowed Cindy Parker (Ellen Wheeler) who has contracted HIV. Angie helps Cindy find a job to support her young son Scott and even invites into her home which doesn't sit well with Jesse. Angie does her best to help Cindy maintain a healthy lifestyle but their isn't much she can do. Meanwhile, a hate group sets fire to the Hubbard home in an attempt to drive Cindy out of town. In June 1988, tragedy strikes when Jesse is gunned down in the line of duty. He dies with Angie by his side. Angie is further devastated in 1989 when Cindy dies from AIDS.
