Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

LTA IP block

Hey Bongwarrior, just a heads up regarding 182.68.84.116 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log). You might need to revoke talk page access. -- LuK3 (Talk) 16:05, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – March 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

Thank you for blocking vandalism

I don't know where to send my thank you, so here you go. (BTW my personal opinion is that IP address is only attacking one individual page, maybe just block them for that individual page?)

xinbenlv Talk, Remember to "ping" me 23:57, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

That page has been a target for a while. I've reprotected it. --Bongwarrior (talk) 00:00, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, I totally agree that page itself shall be protected. I realize the page just recently (maybe within an hour?) get unprotected.
Just curious Would blocking IP to a bit too heavy for that poor vandaliser who probably don't know what they were doing, and maybe we can turn vandaliser to editor? xinbenlv Talk, Remember to "ping" me 00:02, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
They were doing exactly what they came here to do. If they wanted to be making good edits, they would be. I'm very tolerant of inconsequential "gee whiz, can I really edit this" messing around, but much less so towards a long-term pattern of disruption. I did give them a token warning, which I wouldn't have bothered with if I had already noticed that this was an ongoing problem. --Bongwarrior (talk) 00:09, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
Makes sense. Thank you for explaining! xinbenlv Talk, Remember to "ping" me 00:29, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

The Admin's Barnstar
Thanks for getting rid of that useless AFD Homeofthething (talk) 02:27, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
This is what I wrote before I edit conflicted with your deletion:
@Homeofthething and Drmies: Yes, and according to Wikipedia:Rules for Fools April fool's events should not take place before April 1 in UTC. This shows up as a regular AfD at April Fools right now, which should not be happening. Especially since this article is likely receiving an increased amount of viewership at this time, this AfD should probably be closed early as keep.
Thank you for dealing with this, but I did have a question. Why did you choose G1 as the CSD criteria? I admit I'm not a frequent contributor to AfD, but I thought that the result would probrably be a speedy keep. Clovermoss (talk) 02:34, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
It was definitely not a G1 to be clear (probably no speedy criteria applies, technically), but my goal was to flush it as quickly as possible, and G1 is the first one on the list. Speedy keep would have been correct, but even that gives it a legitimacy I don't think it deserved. --Bongwarrior (talk) 02:42, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

I guess i just wanted to show an modest amount of huh and confusion Homeofthething (talk) 02:38, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

"First one on the list" is an excellent rationale. Drmies (talk) 02:44, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Bongwarrior and Drmies. I guess this is a great example of WP:IAR, then? I'm happy with that. Clovermoss (talk) 02:47, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
@Homeofthething: I should have made it clearer that I was addressing Bongwarrior, not you. Maybe I should have removed the pings, especially since adding my comment under yours creates confusion. By the way, I noticed that you're new here, so welcome to Wikipedia! Links to the jargon/shorthand I used can be found at Wikipedia:Edit conflict and Wikipedia:CSD. Adding of respective husband's last names in Joanna Newsom and Stephanie Beatriz

Hi Bongwarrior, It has come to my attention that you have removed said items as stated in the subject line. I have been adding them because they have mentioned it that since marriage, they have taken their respective husbands names. For Joanna Newsom Samberg, it is in a youtube video where Samberg himself mentions that Joanna has taken his last name but for record sales purpose its Newsom. Moreover, I have solid proof that she has added Samberg to her last name in the public marriage license records,, you can check them for yourselves. and I would really like you to inform me before you've blocked me.. that was so rude of you 27.104.205.78 (talk) 09:40, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Hello. From what I can tell, that does not appear to be so. I did attempt to check the link you provided, but it is some sort of paywalled public records service. A google search for "Joanna Caroline Newsom-Samberg" returns only Wikipedia mirrors and "Stephanie Beatriz-Hoss Bischoff Alvizuri" returns nothing. If we have reliable sources that mention those names, we can certainly revisit the matter. --Bongwarrior (talk) 17:23, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi, Bongwarrior, you probably noted that as soon as the protection on Beethoven was lifted, tyhe article was hit by same sort of vandalism. Special:WantedTemplates

Hi, I have been cleaning up Special:WantedTemplates and noticed that Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:"_+_"oldafdfull"_+_" is pointing to your monobook.js pages. clearly these are false positives (basically a bug in how WP parses .js pages). it would be really great if you could add
// <syntaxhighlight lang=javascript> to the top and
// </syntaxhighlight> to the bottom of those pages. by putting these tags in comments, it won't prevent the javascript from executing, but it will remove those pages from Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:"_+_"oldafdfull"_+_". alternatively, if you are no longer using the monobook skin (many people are using vector these days) and don't need to keep the old page, you could just have the page deleted. thank you in advance for your help. Jack Dorsey

I added the following to Jack Dorsey's page.

Dorsey appeared to lie under oath in response to a question by Senator Ted Cruz. He stated that Twitter was no longer blocking links to a New York Post expose of Biden family business dealings. Subsequent attempts to post links to the article where made by Cruz and others were blocked.

It was subsequently removed and now the page is locked due to an attempt at vandalism by another user. Please explain to me how I can get this published.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Izzman (talkcontribs) 20:29, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

You might want to propose it on the article's talk page if it can be sourced (reliably). Unsourced statements like that will almost always be removed. "Biden family business dealings" does give me pause, however. --Bongwarrior (talk) 23:29, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:29, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Pesto

Stop changing the edits on the Pesto page. It is suppose to say "For reasons of expense or availability, almond, brazil, cashew, hazelnut, macadamia, pecan, pistachio, walnut, or even peanuts are sometimes substituted for the traditional pine nuts." which is what it originally said and is what i keep correcting it to. It says "Brazil" as in Brazil Nuts as Brazil Nuts are one of the list of nuts that are often substituted for the traditional Pine Nuts so it is clear it is meant to say "Brazil" there. It is not meant to say "Basil" so stop changing it to "Basil" as this is incorrect. If you read the article you will see that "Basil" makes no sense as the "Basil" would never be a substitute for Pine Nuts which are a completely different component. Please change it back to "Brazil" as it is meant to say this as Brazil Nuts are a common substitute for Pine Nuts in some Pesto products. It is meant to say "Brazil" instead of "Basil" there and this is very obvious. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.205.241.149 (talk) 06:12, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

User you blocked still disrupting

Hi. I can see that you might not still be around and editing, so please ignore this if the timing is all wrong. It's just that AIV seems to be running very slowly right now so if an intervention was possible it would certainly help. The user Sillyboy69, whom you blocked, is currently very active as an IP doing the same stuff. I know it's not really that urgent, and no-one will die - it's just a pain in the A, is all! But, as I say, if you are seeing this tomorrow ... no worries. Cheers DBaK (talk) 22:24, 9 January 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for the note, but I was away unfortunately. --Bongwarrior (talk) 02:58, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
Thanks – not to worry at all at all. AIV seemed quite badly backlogged when I wrote that, but then it was sorted out miraculously quickly. Plus tbh the disruption whilst annoying was hardly Thames-on-fire harmful. Cheers DBaK (talk) 22:41, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

Edit (Revert) leading to misleading Discography section

Hi Bongwarrior,

You reverted an edit I made to alert readers that the "Discography" section in the main "Pink Floyd" article includes only the 15 studio albums (they being the source of (almost) all new creative material), and not any of the 50 other "derivative" issued discs (3 "live albums", 9 "compilation albums", 5 "box sets", 6 EPs, 27 singles (only 4 of which are not album material), etc.). These numbers come from the separate complete article on "Pink Floyd Discography", and in fact the summary Discography in the main "Pink Floyd" article is currently identical to the "Studio Albums" section of the full discography article.

Can you please explain your justification for returning the section heading to the misleading un-qualified state ? Iolar~enwiki (talk) 02:22, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

I didn't make that edit, the editor before me did. I removed Delicate Sound of Thunder, which you had added, because it isn't a studio album and I presumed it was a mistake. --Bongwarrior (talk) 02:31, 22 January 2021 (UTC)
