Hi Mathglot,

Do you remember our talk? Now I wonder if I should make any edits here because of reverts like this, or this. Were those reverts justified? The only reason I still make sporadic edits is developing my English. Is it to poor to edit here? But maybe I should find a better way to do so, like making comments on some forums, Youtube, etc, and limit my edits only to Simple Wiki? I am very curious about your opinion. @Elinruby:, That's a different Gerasimov, not Valery Gerasimov (author of the doctrine); just some general who has the same last name. I was confused at first, too. Mathglot (talk) 19:03, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

Battle of France in WW2

The Germans did not primarily go through Belgium to take France in WW2. They invaded Belgium with only a small portion of their forces to cut off the flanks and to serve as a decoy, while the vast majority of the German breakthrough was at the French part of The Meuse. CessnaMan1989 (talk) 14:03, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

I got one simple question;

How can one mention of khizr khan by just one single author (Eaton) makes it mainstream, while Afghan which is mentioned by historical primary sources such as- muntakhabul lubab and many secondary sources by respected authors makes it fringe? I cant take hold of that logic. Thank you.84.211.45.132 (talk) 20:22, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

On Talk:Ghost of Kyiv

Friendly notice: I pulled your recent "40,000-foot" comment into its own section ([1]) for visibility. It sounded like a different topic to me. If you disagree with re-sectioning please feel free to revert. --N8wilson 23:55, 20 March 2022 (UTC)

@N8wilson:, in this case, it's fine. Even when placing it, I couldn't decide myself if it deserved its own section, and had already typed in a couple of longish sentences inviting separation into a different subsection, or section, and why, but then decided it was more distracting from the point I was trying to make than helpful, and dropped the extra text. In theory, your refactor into a new section is a WP:TPO violation, and imho one should tread lightly, there; asking me here was certainly the right thing to do. If I do so much as fix someone else's indent, comma, or missing curly bracket, I always call out "technical WP:TPO violation" in the edit summary. For anything more serious than that, I usually ask first, and back off if they are opposed. Nevertheless, in this case I have no quarrel with your doing what I was already prepared to invite you (or anyone) to do, so all's well that ends well!
Oh there might be a broken link now, since I think I linked to your section title from an older section higher up the page; I'll try to find it and fix it if you haven't already, as someone following that link might not find my comment. Thanks again, cheers, Mathglot (talk) 00:37, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

Celedón

Also might be to your taste. Currently tagged as a rough translation from an unknown language. I am not quite sure myself. There is a Catalan version, but the Spanish and Basque versions are both longer. There was a mistranslation of "bajada", which made me think Spanish, but towards the end of the article there is "neska", which turns out to be Basque for "young girl", possibly used as a foreign language word in either a Catalan or Spanish language text.

I am unsure about "blouses" and would like to run some speculation past you that is based on cognates (yes, I know, and that is why I am asking). In French "blouse" does not mean a woman's blouse, but rather a smock such as peasants once wore. So perhaps it is an idiom for peasants, or more precisely the French "paysan", which is not quite the same thing. More like "countryman". Celedón is in fact a country man, so....

If content is needed, I am thinking this is all about something rather like the burning of Zozobra except that he gets set on fire and is also known as Old Man Gloom, whereas Celedón seems pretty happy-go-lucky. Elinruby (talk) 05:37, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

PS - I am catching some low-hanging fruit on a first-do-no-harm basis Elinruby (talk) 05:40, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

Basque version is closest to English. Maybe it was Basque with Spanish words (bajada). Anyway, none of this is even slightly urgent, but if it tickles your curiosity into figuring out what a blouse group is, I would be interested in hearing the answer Elinruby (talk) 06:04, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
@Elinruby: The bajada actually is descent and is properly translated. Or at least, the concept is right, even if you might use a synonym in English. Think of Mary Poppins floating down to earth, would that be a "descent"? Because that's exactly what Celedon does: he floats down out of the sky with an umbrella. So, "descent of Celedon" seems fine. As for "blusas" that isn't necessarily "blouse" in English, but you can see what he's wearing in the images, and it's more like an unconstructed jacket like the kind that stockbrokers on Wall Street wear, or maybe doctors in hospital, or artists. One word you could use is "smock", which is a bit rarer in English than blusa in Spanish or blouse in French, but that pretty much nails the item. Oh, I just reread your comment, and you proposed "smock" already, ha! Well, that's exactly the right word, imho. So, that, plus whatever word describes what Mary Poppins does on her landing approach.
Here's an article with a video. Mathglot (talk) 07:10, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

I already fixed bajada; a steep grade on the highway south of Santa Fe is called La Bajada, so it's in my Spanish working vocabulary. Forget what it was before. Thank you for validating blouse, since we both know the perils of cognates. So a blouse group would be a group of country people? Not sure why it didn't occur to me to zoom the picture ;) Elinruby (talk) 07:17, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

@Elinruby: I would assume that a "blouse group" would be an example of metonymy, so yes, your assumption sounds right to me. Like we might say, "A bunch of suits were heading up to the revolving restaurant." Mathglot (talk) 07:24, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

K thanks ;) Elinruby (talk) 07:30, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

Life is short, Wikipedia is large

The ratio of my effort to article improvement is too high at Russian information war against Ukraine. I am taking it off my watchlist to spend time more productively elsewhere.

After I fixed a couple of typos, the article got on my watchlist. When Buidhe moved the page, it generated something like four new lines on my watchlist, so I commented on her action, endorsing it. (Buidhe and I had previously edited together in mid-2021 on an article she posted to DYK and I reviewed, so once I recognized her name, I said hello.) I don't think it's possible for two editors to move a page "in tandem" whatever that means. Day after day of PAs and failure to AGF ensued. Elinruby listens to you, and it would be great if you stuck up a bit for WP:CIVIL.

Thanks for your helpful suggestions at Russian disinformation since 2000. HouseOfChange (talk) 00:45, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

@HouseOfChange: Thanks for your comment; I understand what you are saying. I am, in my own way, trying to do what you suggest, and trying to play peacemaker, although what with not having as much time as I'd like to devote to this, my efforts are probably too slow and maybe not as effective as you would wish. That said, there's a lot to be learned from the recent exchanges which I know have pained you. I don't question the good faith of everyone involved in this, and I think some things came up which would have been better off avoided; and I hope after the dust settles on this situation, and I can backfill a few other topics I've neglected lately, and that after that I can return to a situation here where everything is calmer, and we can all sit around the campfire, and figure out how to avoid a repeat.
In the meantime, I hope we meet again on whatever topic of history, current events, or anything else, I've enjoyed interacting with you. Drop by and say 'Hello' some time, if we don't bump into each other by accident. Until then, Happy editing!
P.S., Your section header sounds like a great title for an essay. Something to think about... Mathglot (talk) 01:06, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
A different but Ukraine-related topic: Wikiquote. Very long quotes from fringe and Russian proxy websites (with a notable absence of any pro-Ukraine quotes) have been cobbled together to create what look like Wikipedia articles "showing" how the expansion of NATO and Ukraine being "really" a part of Russia force Putin's hand, while the danger of atomic war means that nobody should oppose him. Anyway, Wikiquote is supposed to be "sourced quotes from notable people." Quotes don't have to be NPOV, they can express an opinion, but piling up opinions from marginally notable (or not notable) fringers while until I got there the "2021–2022 Russo-Ukrainian crisis" article (version of 31 March) did not even include even one of these quotes: "Take these seeds and put them in your pockets," "Russian warship, go fuck yourself," and "I need ammunition not a ride." Not one of them. Wikiquote is exactly the right place to put any pithy opinion quotes (which still don't belong in a Wikipedia article lead,) so spend some time there if you can. War crimes and crimes against humanity

Hey, I noticed that you undid my page moves and you did make a good point as to why. I think that the article title just containing "war crimes" is quite misleading though. Are you okay if I move the article from "Russian war crimes" to "Russian war crimes and crimes against humanity" for example? Fluffy89502 (talk) 22:46, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

@Fluffy89502: thanks for your question. It's a good one, and deserves to be discussed. However, no other editors interested in the question will find it here on my Talk page. Can you copy or transfer this message to Talk:Russian war crimes, so that others can see it, and join in if they wish? I'd be happy to move it and respond there if you like, or if you prefer, you can move it; let me know if you have a preference. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 23:01, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi Mathglot, thank you for your words at AN/I (regarding Fandom attribution). I was trying to help but it looks like I muddied the waters, so I appreciate your correction and will adjust my practices accordingly in the future! DanCherek (talk) 19:37, 9 April 2022 (UTC)

@DanCherek:, it's a very tricky area, and I'm still learning. I don't think you necessarily muddied the waters, you just gave your interpretation based on a (fallible, written-by-committee) guideline. I hope I did a good job in that discussion, but the guideline could stand to be improved.
Regarding policy or guidelines (e.g, WP:CWW, WP:COPYRIGHT, WP:PLAGIARISM) based on external documents like ToU, I find that when in doubt, we have to go to the fine print in the actual primary documents (some of which have legal implications, like licenses and terms of use, and I'm no lawyer!) to see what they actually say, and interpret from there. The guidelines try to interpret them for us to make it easier, and mostly they do a good job and I'm grateful for them, but we also have to remember that the guideline and policy pages (unlike ToU) can by modified by any Wikipedia editor. Sometimes, they make me raise an eyebrow, or in an attempt to be clear, they don't really do so as well as they might, or they leave too much room for interpretation than the original documents did, or they even mislead (as the doc at Fandom content currently does). Lawyers are writers by profession, and they carefully weigh every word in legal documents, sometimes reusing expressions that have withstood legal challenges in the past in order to have a level of confidence that they won't be challenged next time (at least, in precedent-based legal systems such as in the U.S., which has jurisdiction over Wikimedia because it's based in San Francisco). Unfortunately, that can lead to some baroque or confusing wording for us peasants. (Actually, I think that the WMF and Wikia/Fandom ToU do a very good job of using standard English, and being clear.) Normally, I trust the guidelines, but if a question arises, I find we have to go back to the originals to see if the guideline really got it right, or not.
I hope I've done a fair job of representing the originals in this case, and if the guidelines are less than completely clear, then they should be improved. If you were confused, that's good enough evidence for me that the guidelines are not doing the job. Or else, conversely, your interpretation was correct, and mine is completely wrong; but that's *still* an argument that the guidelines aren't doing a good enough job; so either way, imho, there's a guideline issue; it's not right that experienced editors like we both are should get tripped up by them. Any help you could offer improving the Plagiarism or Copy-within guideline, or any of the guidelines mentioned in connection with this, would be really appreciated. Mathglot (talk) 20:17, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
I definitely agree with what you've written here, and that the guidelines could use some improvement to be more understandable for the community. (Also gaining a newfound respect for my lawyer friends...) I'll take a closer look at the specific terms on Fandom when I have some time, and then give it some more thought! DanCherek (talk) 20:37, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
@DanCherek: Thanks! (Courtesy links added above.) Mathglot (talk) 20:38, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
@DanCherek: Maybe if we collaborated on some improvements, that could be a good thing. After all, given our tendency to interpret it differently, anything that gets both of us to agree on what it means, is probably a step in the right direction, and could be helpful for others as well. Mathglot (talk) 22:50, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
Sure, I'd be happy to! DanCherek (talk) 23:19, 9 April 2022 (UTC)

Template:Str parendis

Has Template:Str parendis been substituted/used anywhere? --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 20:05, 18 April 2022 (UTC)

@WikiCleanerMan: Template str parendis was created as one approach to a solution for one of the bug reports encountered during the testing of the customization of the "Find_sources" template. As explained (diff), that template didn't end up being needed and we found a better approach. I'll move it to my user space, as it could be useful in the future. Thanks for asking, Mathglot (talk) 20:32, 18 April 2022 (UTC)

Nomination for deletion of Template:Conditional heading

Template:Conditional heading has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the entry on the Templates for discussion page. Gonnym (talk) 07:54, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

@Gonnym:, I don't see the nomination. When I follow the link, I see Template:Time Is A Thief. Please advise. Mathglot (talk) 10:05, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
I reverted the nomination as the template was different than what I thought. It's still not 100% good as it disables the edit and subscribe links, but my rational for nomination was that it wasn't a real header, which after inspecting the html output I see that it is. Gonnym (talk) 11:39, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll be looking at that. I know that there are suggestions for selective transclusion (which this is not) about how to add an "edit" link for the transcluded section, and maybe that could be used as a model. There's also the vte links used in Infoboxes; and finally, we could simply add the edit and subscribe links as they currently appear in normal sections, if that makes the most sense. Clara Knecht

Concenrning Clara Knecht could be so kind as to write to me underneath here the exact wikicode you uswed for diff ? I would really appreciate as my diffs do not link properly to the special diff edits. warm regards, Nattes à chat (talk) 12:56, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

@Nattes à chat:, sure, it is the following:
Repairing insufficient attribution: The previous edit of 13:18, 13 April 2022 was copied from the French article :fr:Clara Knecht; the edits of 14:11, 18 April and 14:14, 18 April were translated from the French article fr:Clara Knecht; see that article's history for attribution.
Please note two important things about this:
  1. This style is only for fixing up attribution for copying done in the past; that is, it is used only for already-existing articles where you forgot to add the recommended attribution statement to the edit summary the first time around at the time when the copying (or translation) was performed, and you want to fix it up now, after the fact. Do not use this style going forward for new cases of copying/translating content; the style for that is much simpler (see WP:CWW and WP:TFOLWP).
  2. If you do want to repair insufficient attribution for some copying performed earlier, the style you see above is more complex than the minimum requirement, and you don't have to duplicate that style if you don't want to; I use the more complex version for convenience, but it isn't required. Here is a simpler edit summary for that same edit that fully satisfies the requirement:
Note: The previous edit of 13:18, 13 April 2022 was copied from the French article :fr:Clara Knecht; the edits of 14:11 and 14:14, 18 April 2022 were translated from the French article Clara Knecht; see that article's history for attribution.
I use the more complex version with the extra links in it in an attempt to make the summary more convenient and to be more helpful to readers of the page history who might not be familiar with Wikipedia copyright and licensing. But you don't have to go the extra mile if you don't want to; per the licensing requirement, only the French article name needs to be hyperlinked; all the other links are just a convenience.
Also, just a reminder that going forward, the attribution statement for new translation or copying that you make and attribute in the edit summary at the same time, is very simple:
Translated content from the French article :fr:<page name>; see that page's history for attribution.
(Change the word 'translated' to 'copied' as appropriate.) You don't have to make it more complicated than that, unless you wish to. Thanks for asking, and thanks also for your contributions and translations from French Wikipedia! Feel free to contact me any time. Mathglot (talk) 20:37, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
Very useful, thank you so much ! it ws the previous edit that I missed :). I have finished updating the published articles, not quite my sandboxes. Nattes à chat (talk) 22:36, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
@Nattes à chat: If you have moved the sandbox to an article previously, and fixed attribution in the article page history, you don't have to duplicate that effort by adding it back to the sandbox as well. Think of the bottom line: if a user wants to trace the copied or translated content appearing in an article back to the original editors by checking the edit summaries in the page history, can they do it? If they can find the attribution statement about Clara Knecht in the page history, there's no need to add it back into the sandbox as well. Conversely, if you start a new sandbox in the future with content copied or translated from fr-wiki and you attribute it in the edit summary at the same time, then when you later move the sandbox to main space, you don't need to attribute it a second time; the original attribution remains in the history of the page, and can be found by anyone who is interested in looking for it. Mathglot (talk) 22:51, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
ah ok in the mean time I continued to apply it to every edit so this will save me some time :) Nattes à chat (talk) 11:00, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for your tactful but clear and firm edits at Sichuan cuisine. You probably noticed that the editor is in a student project, which brings up the question of why the instructor doesn't take responsibility. Still, this student is probably doing their best. Cheers in any case. ch (talk) 15:50, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

@CWH:, yes, I do a fair bit of work with student editors, and also try to support the one remaining content editor at Wiki Edu, because they are overloaded. Just reverted this run of ten edits by the same editor at Sichuan cuisine; given the long edit summary previously, I didn't go into as much detail this time, but I did leave them a brief UTP message. Hopefully, they'll learn about WP:Verifiability, or the instructor will step in. Mathglot (talk) 20:53, 1 May 2022 (UTC)

Sorry

Dear @Mathglot:, You were right to collapse the discussion I was involved in here, ([4]). It was a fluid conversation and I used the wrong Talk page. Very sorry about that. I still have concerns about WP:AFDDISCUSS and WP:PLAYPOLICY (and possibly more) but I will address those concerns elsewhere. Thank you for doing the right thing. I appreciate it. Best regards, BetsyRMadison (talk) 23:28, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

BetsyRMadison no worries; things get heated sometimes, and we might say things that belong in a different venue, as you said. I'm glad you saw it the way you did, as I didn't want to point fingers at anybody, or shut down valid content disagreement. (If it matters, I'm probably more sympathetic to your position on the merits than anyone else's, but now that I've collapsed part of the discussion, I may stay away from voting, to maintain neutrality.) Thanks for commenting, and happy editing! Mathglot (talk) 00:04, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

EN1792

Apparently they got themselves an indefinite block and just appealed. The appeal compounded their sins and was righreously declined. A review of the decline was also declined. As somebody said elsewhere in another context, what a shame. Maybe you have already seen this, but anyone else passing through might need context.

Anyway, I told Doug Weller, the admin who declined to review, that the three of us had indeed been discussing Babel boxes, but that I wasn’t familiar with any subsequent admin interaction, and that WP:PNT needs Russian and Farsi translators. This is primarily a heads up that that all this happened.

The attitude concerns seem to be warranted, what can I say? How do you get blocked in an argument with an admin over a Babel box? So many questions. I would offer to mentor, but since a different admin has recently told me that *I* have an attitude, perhaps I should process that for a while instead. Anyway, I have seen Doug be a voice of reason in the past, perhaps at Panama Papers, and asked him for suggestions, fyi. Sorry your name was mentioned in this context because I was talking to you Elinruby (talk) 19:46, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

I thought I'd reply to this comment here rather than on the article talk page, since it's a bit off topic. We've supported several disability-related courses, including three this semester. XFLQR is actually running their class for the third time. Helaine (who is blind, and is quite interested in getting more classes to participate in this area) might be interested in your ideas for areas to work on. I recommend shooting her an email at helaine@wikiedu.org. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:23, 6 May 2022 (UTC)

Re coordinating conjunctions and correlative conjunctions

Hi Mathglot. If you check the cites I just posted in Conjunction_(grammar)#Etymology, you'll see the trends re the recently diminishing use of the terms coordinating conjunction and correlative conjunction. Questions –

  1. Do you know of any terms that have been supplanting them, and that might be proper additions to the Conjunction (grammar) article?
  2. Do you have any concrete evidence for citing the reason re the abovementioned trend in diminished use?

I have my own theories (mainly, that coordinating conjunction and correlative conjunction are cross-linguistic and interlingual nightmares) that aren't ripe for Wikipedia. In my own lexicon, I shun the terms in favor of protologistic stuff that similarly isn't ripe for Wikipedia. Cheers.--Kent Dominic·(talk) 17:09, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

Would you consider becoming a New Page Reviewer?

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months. (Purge)

Hi Mathglot,

I've recently been looking for editors to invite to join the new page reviewing team, and after reviewing your editing history, I think you would be a good candidate. Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; the new page reviewing team needs help from experienced users like yourself.

Would you please consider becoming a New Page Reviewer? Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision (if it looks daunting, don't worry, most pages are easy to review, and habits are quick to develop). If this looks like something that you can do, please consider joining us. If you choose to apply, you can drop an application over at WP:PERM/NPR. If you have questions, please feel free to drop a message on my talk page or at the reviewer's discussion board.

Cheers, and hope to see you around, (t · c) buidhe 00:20, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

Hello, Mathglot,

Just a head's up, this draft is due to be deleted tonight via CSD G13. If there is any content you want to preserve, you might edit this page. If not, well, the draft will be deleted tonight. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 22:16, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

@Liz:, yikes, thank you so much; that would have been a disaster! Well, maybe not a disaster, I guess there's always REFUND. I might need to move this suite of templates to my user space, as other stuff keeps piling onto my stack faster than I can clear it out to get to the older stuff that's (urgently?) waiting for attention. (Does that sound at all familiar?) Thanks a lot for letting me know! Mathglot (talk) 22:25, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
