WikiProject Software Announcement

[edit]
Announcement
  • Software Wikia is a wiki specialised on software using semantic extras. If a nice article does not have the required Wikipedia:Notability, simply export it and ask an admin for an import there.
  • WikiProject Free Software is now merged with WikiProject Software. The link to WikiProject Free Software is Wikipedia:WikiProject Software/Free Software.
  • To better serve Wikipedia, WikiProject Malware is now under the parent of WikiProject Computer Security. All Malware articles are currently being transferred over to the new project. In any case, you are welcome to join at WikiProject Computer Security!
  • All members of WikiProject Software are urged to install the Centralized Announcement System on their talk page.
  • I have changed the participant (members) table by replacing the Task column with Area of Expertise. I also introduced a new template based status system so as to "arrange" the members according to whether they are active, semi-active, inactive, or retired. Please update your entry accordingly.
  • New IRC server! The old channel on Freenode is not used anymore. See See here. Manual for using IRC can be found here for why. Find us at:
Server host irc.libera.chat
Port 6697

Your VandalProof Application

[edit]

Dear Tinlv7,

Thank you for applying for VandalProof! (VP). As you may know, VP is a very powerful program, and in fact with the new 1.1 version release it has even more power. As such we must uphold strict protocols before approving a new applicant. Regretfully, I have chosen to decline your application at this time. The reason for this is that for security reasons, VandalProof's creator requires it's users to have made 250 edits to articles, which you have not. Please note it is nothing personal by any means, and we certainly welcome you to apply again in the not too distant future. Thank you for your interest in VandalProof.

arsenal vs barca deletion

[edit]

why did you delete my thing that said that arsenal was beating barca 1-0.

Sorry... Trying to delete vandalism and I kinda got a bit trigger-happy

Neutron and proton

[edit]

Neutrons are drawn to protons (and also to each other, as protons are drawn to each other) by the strong nuclear force. SBHarris 18:46, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Huh? What do you mean? I created the Or Game.  QuizQuick  21:10, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sandbox

[edit]

I saw your post on the sandbox. Whether or not you really wanted a reply, here it is. Welcome to Wikipedia! -ENIAC (Talk) 00:11, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DON'T PRESS THIS RED BUTTON
feel tempted?

(just kidding)
No, the red bot button will not block you (unless you press it a whole lot of times and overload the servers). It will block the bot, and then only if you’re an admin. Happy editing. --Van helsing 09:23, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And even then it just prefills the block form for you, admins have to confirm the block on the next page. — xaosflux Talk 01:50, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just thought you should look through this guideline after seeing this edit you made. Also, in the future, you can just use this link to reset the sandbox if the header is there or not. A full set of sandbox reset links can be found here. Happy editing! Timrem 22:39, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, just got a bit testy there. thanks for the link though. Please respond on my talk page. tinlv7 02:25, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's no problem, I just wanted to make sure you didn't make a habit of it ;) Timrem 03:06, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Inductors

[edit]
So... in essence, an inductor tries to keep the current flowing at a constant speed...?

Yes, although "magnitude" would be a better term than speed ;-).

Atlant 23:31, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, the current is proportional to the average speed of the charge carriers, so that seems like a good way to think of it. —Keenan Pepper 02:34, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Capacitance

[edit]

http://www.google.com/search?q=4400+milliampere+hours+%2F+10.8+volts , which is a astronomically large capacitance. —Keenan Pepper 00:33, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • astronomically...? I found all that information on my laptop battery. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tinlv7 (talkcontribs) .
Your laptop battery is not a capacitor. It is probably an electrolytic cell that stores energy in chemical form rather than in an electric field like a capacitor. Therefore it doesn't make sense to assign it a "capacitance", and the 1500 farad figure is meaningless. —Keenan Pepper 01:50, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You can, however, use those two measurements to calculate the amount of energy your battery can store: http://www.google.com/search?q=4400+milliampere+hours+*+10.8+voltsKeenan Pepper 01:53, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
hmm... I always thought of batteries as capacitors. (Please respond on my talk page.) tinlv7 12:00, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
They are similar in that they both store energy that can be extracted as electric current, but there are important differences. The voltage across a capacitor is directly proportional to the amount of charge stored, because a capacitor is simply two places to store opposite charges separated by an insulator. If the charge is doubled, the electric field is doubled, so the voltage is doubled. This would be a bad behavior for batteries, because the device using the battery might depend on a constant voltage. Say you have an electronic calculator that needs at least 1 volt to operate, and it's powered by a 2 volt battery. If the battery were a simple capacitor, its voltage would steadily decrease as it discharged, and when it was half discharged the voltage would fall below 1 volt and the calculator would turn off. Half of the battery's capacity would be wasted! On the other hand, an electrolytic cell can sustain a nearly constant voltage until it completely runs out of chemical fuel and the voltage suddenly drops to zero, allowing the full capacity of the battery to be used. That's because it stores the energy in chemical form instead of electric form. Hmm, maybe I should write an article about this... —Keenan Pepper 18:05, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
thanks. that makes sooooo much sense now... (Please respond on my talk page.) tinlv7 19:11, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
but then... how would you measure the amount of charge a battery can handle? (Please respond on my talk page.) tinlv7 19:18, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The milliampere hour is a unit of charge. One coulomb is an ampere second, so a milliampere hour is 3600/1000 = 3.6 coulombs. —Keenan Pepper 20:42, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
oh... thanks. (Please respond on my talk page.) tinlv7 20:57, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

-3 dB

[edit]

-3 dB relative to what? — Omegatron 22:40, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hmm... actually, I read it on one of those multi-input/output box thingies. thanks for the clarification though. -tinlv7

What things? — Omegatron 23:52, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
y'know those things they hook up to Tv's, VCR's, DVD players, and whatnot? the button on the remote says "AUX". (Please respond on my talk page.) tinlv7 00:11, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It could mean anything. dB by itself is meaningless; it has to be related to something else. I can't tell what your measurement means unless you give a lot more detail. — Omegatron 00:46, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, it's not really useful. It doesn't seem like very "fair use" to include music for the sake of music.—ウルタプ 04:52, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

alright, then I won't put it there. thanks for your input. By the way, how can I install new language packs to XP without the cd?

Re: Canon

[edit]

You or someone with IP 24.227.116.226 (talkcontribs) wrote on Talk:Spider-Man's powers and equipment:

Would I be correct in saying the movies are non-canon? - (please respond on this page and my talk page) tinlv7

And I reply:

Yep, that's correct. More precisely, they're not in the comic book canon, but have their own separate movie canon. The novelizations aren't really in the movie canon either, actually; they're based on early revisions of the script, so they have their sort of separate movie-novel canon, that the movies aren't really "required" to follow. --HKMarksTALKCONTRIBS 01:07, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm... Then mabye I shouldn't have put that bit about the spider-sense in movies there. Thanks. (Please respond on my talk page.) tinlv7 11:49, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(oh, by the way, that IP is my new laptop. I just forgot to log in again.)

No, it's OK. Some differences between other versions are noted elsewhere on the page. As long as it's clear that it's another version that you're talking about, it's fine. --HKMarksTALKCONTRIBS 13:00, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks. (Please respond on my talk page.) tinlv7 20:59, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

FFX Battle system

[edit]

The box on the upper right corner tells you who's turn is next, in order. Particularly useful to know when to attack or to defend. :D Agility ? Meh, don't know that one. Try a big FF forum for that. I list some on my page. Renmiri 04:24, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agility only affects how quickly you act (highest Agility goes first) and how often you get to act. krikkert (Talk) 16:26, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Uglies

[edit]

The "vandalism" I was referring to was this edit, which was only partially reverted with this edit. The series/trilogy edit by another IP in that timeframe mostly got caught in the crossfire, especially since I'm not familiar enuf with the books to know which was more accurate. My edit was mostly to revert to your last signed-in edit, but with the problem you referred to as "...can someone please help get the templates back without removing the comments..." fixed by removing the extra exclamation marks in the HTML comments. Sorry for the confusion. 71.231.107.188 23:58, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Live Search Club - Fair/Unfair

[edit]

Not really. Microsoft was well-aware of the fact that people would eventually begin cheating at the games. They aren't so stupid as to believe that any single product will be unhackable. Every single time they release anything, they are fully aware of the risks of people hacking the software.

So, with them being aware of this, they knowingly let advertisers begin funding this project, knowing that at some point, the advertisers won't get the money they deserve anymore. Hopefully the advertisers were also aware of this.

Really, nobody should feel sorry for anybody, here. It's just a bunch of big corporations getting more money, and losing a tiny bit in minor prizes. Not a huge deal, really. -D14BL0 00:04, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WP:CVU status

[edit]

The Wikipedia:Counter-Vandalism Unit project is under consideration to be moved to {{inactive}} and/or {{historical}} status. Another proposal is to delete or redirect the project. You have been identified as a project member and your input as to this matter would be welcomed at WT:CVU#Inactive.3F and at the deletion debate. Thank you! TV 24 is a drama

[edit]

You made a good point about the use of the Nuclear Football. But of course your comment must be rhetorical, since the Football is just an element in a fictional drama. Here's another one: How can a satellite system probe deep into a building to detect, real time, the position of people? Also, I want a PDA just like Jack Bauer's! User talk:169.139.180.100

[edit]

Re: your question at User talk:169.139.180.100: It is standard procedure not to block public IP addresses permanently or for more than one year. Unfortunately students at this school are not to keen in collaborating in this great project so as much as it pains me, the account had to be blocked. There is a mechanism to request a block lift using the unblock template as explained above, but there are no longer blocks except in extreme and unusual circumstances. -- Alexf42 20:55, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
