Request Information

Request made by: z ε n 02:55, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Where is the issue taking place?
My talk page, Torrance High School, and possibly User:twigs' talk.
Who's involved?
IP 75.80.77.216 (Hereafter "IP"), Zen. (me), possibly Twigs
Apparently IP knows me in real life based on repeated usage of my name, but I cannot identify who it is.
What's going on?
IP has a blatant disregard for policy and Wikipedia rules. The first indication of this occurred here, in which IP added a note in the middle of SuggestBot's note, didn't sign it, used my name, and generally did not use talk page etiquette. I responded here. Whether or not that was a polite response I still don't know. During this IP continued to Twigs' Talk, wherein IP made numerous comments (UC STANDARDS, Help THS Earn Money, and GET MORE PHOTOS). All were rude, 'SHOUTING', unsigned, and one was an advert. After conferring with Twigs, I left this message on IP's talk page, which I felt correctly stated what problem I was having with him/her. The problem culminated today (1/27), with IP leaving this message on my page, seemingly frustrated, but still using my name and not signing, and disrupting my talk page with unordered comments.
The little petty things like messing up my talk don't worry me, but I have notified this user twice of pertinent policies, and he/she will not let up.
If I could summarize this altercation in one link: here it is.
I admit, I posted pictures that weren't optimal for that article, and I summarized that talk page with "fixing IP's numerous errors" (here), two errors I could have avoided. But I don't know what to do, beyond constantly citing policies that he/she won't read.
What would you like to change about that?
I need a more eloquent person to explain the rules to this new member, and possibly watch for a while for further disruption.
Would you prefer we work discreetly? If so, how can we reach you?
No, I would prefer a public dissertation of this dispute.

Mediator response

[edit]

If you think a user is continually vandalising a page, you can request an Administrator's attention here. Keep in mind that IP addresses may belong to multiple editors and might not all be the work of an individual.

As a side note, please try to refrain from comments like "Fixing x's errors", as that treads a tad close to the Wikipedia policy on mutual civility. It doesn't sound like much, but little comments tend to become big ones by the time they hit the other side of the internet, and can feed people's aggression unnecessarily. Discussion

[edit]

While using the talk page of the article in question to solve a dispute is encouraged to involve a larger audience, feel free to discuss the case below if that is not possible. Other mediators are also encouraged to join in on the discussion as Wikipedia is based on consensus.

The problem was not the vandalism, it was that this user is not listening to repeated notifications of policy violation. One element of this case is the talk page problems, but those are infractions of Talk Page Etiquette, not qualified as vandalism. I've already acknowledged that I made a mistake summarizing it like that, but again, the problem was not exacerbated by my comment there, because he did not listen to my pleas prior to that remark. If we include civility into this case, I direct your attention to his first comment, in which he states 'You don't know how to take pictures. Those pictures are really bad' which is hardly civil. However, I do not want to include an administrator in this petty dispute, because I think this is the personal level on which the Mediation Cabal seems to act. I thank you so much for your input, but I'm just as frustrated as the other users in this Cabal. I really don't know what to do. z ε n 08:57, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'd recommend submitting a request for administrator attention citing edit warring between you and the IP. If the Administrator sees fit, the IP will receive a warning which may lead to a temporary block (to protect Wikipedia, not as a punitive measure). Flakeloaf 09:29, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that makes sense. I'll do so then, if future offenses occur. Thanks. z ε n 10:27, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Move to close this request. Objections? Jem 12:13, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Closing given no objections for over a week. This probably should have been on WP:ANI from the outset. --Selket Talk 09:28, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
