Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Coordinators/2022/2

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Overview

[edit]

This page is an election of WikiProject coordinators—consisting of one Lead Coordinator and a number of assistant coordinators—for the Guild of Copy Editors (GOCE). Coordinators elected on this page will serve a six-month term beginning at 00:00 on 1 July 2022 and ending at 23:59 on 31 December[a]. GOCE elections are open to all Wikipedians in good standing[b] and self-nominations are welcomed.

The project coordinators are responsible for maintaining the procedural and administrative aspects of the project. They are the designated points of contact for procedural issues and are responsible for ensuring the project as a whole is properly informed of them.

Here are some examples of coordinator duties:
  • manage the proposal and creation of new task forces;
  • ensure project announcements and task lists are kept up-to-date;
  • initiate drafting of guidelines needed by the project;
  • organize the category system;
  • oversee the recruitment of new members, including the use of project notices and other advertising methods;
  • create and maintain any collaborative projects;
  • maintain the project pages and the guidelines on them in a clean and easy-to-use state;
  • monitor technical policies and ensure project templates satisfy them; and
  • assist in organizing and promoting any Backlog Elimination Drives and Blitzes.

They are also expected to generally assist project members with any questions and concerns.

The coordinator positions do not confer any executive power.

Positions

[edit]
  • Lead Coordinator (one open position): will have overall responsibility for procedural and administrative matters within the project.
  • Coordinator (2–4 open positions): will assist the Lead Coordinator by focusing on specific areas within the project that require special attention. These areas will be selected based on need and interest among the coordinators.

Election process

[edit]
  • The nomination process will run for two weeks from June 01, 00:01 until June 15, 23:59.
  • The election process will run for two weeks from June 16, 00:01 until June 30, 23:59.
  • Any member of the project may nominate themselves for either position by creating a new section under Nominations below and copying the sample form below. Nominees only interested in one position should indicate this when adding their names. Candidates need not make extensive statements if they do not wish to do so.
  • The elections will be conducted using simple approval voting. Any member of the project may support a nominee for either position. If the nominee is running for both positions and you wish to support them for only one, please make a note to that effect as part of your vote.
  • Both project members and interested outside parties are encouraged to ask questions of the nominees or to make general comments.

I would like to run as a coordinator as I have done a few of the drives/blitzes at the GOCE and appreciate the effort going into the project, I would like to help keep the project running, as without copyedits, the encylopedia would be written like this: a dukc is a thing that goes quack! And I really enjoy participating in the drives, and I'm sure others do, so I would like to run for Coordinator to help keep them running. | Zippybonzo | Talk | 19:55, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Comments and questions

[edit]
  1. Hi @Zippybonzo: welcome to the GOCE, thank you for volunteering your time as a coordinator. I've noticed you taking part in some of our drives and blitzes; thank you. It's always good to see new people here. I won't ask awkward questions but I'd like to be assured you're familiar with at least some of the Guild's ways of working, and of your willingness (RL permitting, of course!) to coordinate until the end of December. Some aspects of the Guild are complex but you can always ask me or any of the other serving coordinators (and ex-coordinators if they're willing) if you don't understand something. I'd also recommend trawling through archives of our various talk pages. Good luck and cheers, Baffle☿gab 11:29, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    @Baffle gab1978 Sorry for the late reply, I wanted to read some of the archives before replying, I have had a nice look at the coordinators talk page, and I read the main talk page running back to around 2020 ish. I don’t think looking back beyond that is worth it as some of the guild practices will have changed a bit since then. Hopefully this reply satisfied you, if not, drop me a message here or on my UTP, Cheers, (I totally didn’t steal that from you 😉) | Zippybonzo | Talk | 14:46, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks for replying to my comments; I'm quite happy with your response. The talk archives can be useful but it's best not to get too bogged down with them. :) Cheers Baffle☿gab 06:35, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    @Baffle gab1978 I am just curious, what happens if no-one is nominated for Lead Coordinator? Because that seems to have happened. I read somewhere, in one of the archives that it is the person with the most votes, I was wondering if that is still true. | Zippybonzo | Talk | 18:10, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    I think it's offered to the person who get the most votes but I'm not really sure. It's unprecedented afaik. I'll have a look at the archives to see what we've done in the past. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 21:22, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    Maybe offer the position to whoever is willing to do it? (t · c) buidhe 22:34, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    This came up in the 2018(2) election. Reidgreg (talk) 01:33, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    This matter would be better discussed on the talk page but thanks for raising it here. I see Miniapolis has already begun a conversation there. Baffle☿gab 04:55, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  1. You say "happy to continue in any capacity"; might that mean making lead-coordinator-style decisions if absolutely necessary since it seems there won't be a formal lead? BlueMoonset (talk) 03:05, 28 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, along with the other coordinators. All the best, Miniapolis 23:56, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Baffle gab1978 (talk · contribs) • Interested in Coordinator position only.

I'm a current coordinator. I mostly help maintain the Requests page, create and update blitz and drive pages when needed, and review c/e efforts. Due to RL, I'm less active at this time of year. I'm willing to continue wearing the juice in my current role but I'll withdraw my nomination if enough other candidates come forward. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 05:15, 9 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Reidgreg (talk · contribs) • Interested in Coordinator position only.

I've been absent a lot lately due to offline demands on my time and a lack of mental energy. I'm not sure when that will change or what I'm trying to say here. Whether or not I'm a coordinator, I'll still try to participate and work on the task list as I'm available and as needed. Though a break would not be unwelcome right now.

Jonesey95 appointed coordinator emeritus

[edit]

Jonesey95 (talk · contribs), a longtime member of the GOCE Hall of Fame, richly deserves to be appointed coordinator emeritus; I had this ready to go a couple of years ago, when they returned as lead coordinator . Jonesey (first elected coordinator in late 2013) was lead coordinator in 2014, from late 2015 through 2016, from late 2017 through early 2018, and in 2020 and 2021; they were a coordinator from late 2018 to early 2019. Jonesey's greatest contributions, however, have arguably been to templates; setting up drives and blitzes and awarding barnstars is now immeasurably easier! Miniapolis 00:13, 17 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Seconded; Jonesey95 has been a hard-working lead and coordinator, and has made huge contributions in both copy-editing and keeping the Guild running smoothly. I look forward to seeing them continue contributing as an emeritus coordinator. Thanks Jonesey for all of your hard work here. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 05:07, 17 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • In case there is any doubt, I accept this nomination, if that is appropriate for me to do. I still participate in every drive and blitz, and tweak a few things behind the scenes now and then in order to keep the Guild running with minimal drama. Most of my recent WP energy is spent on quick, easily interrupted gnome edits; my RL doesn't allow as much time these days for the focus that copy-editing and Guild management requires. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:20, 17 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thirded. I've seen Jonesey in other parts of Wikipedia working on templates as well, making using Wikipedia easier for other users. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:55, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
