Early Life and Education
[edit | edit source]Lawrence Page also known as Larry Page (March 26, 1973 - Present) is an American, computer scientist. He co-founded Google along with his good friend; Sergey Brin whom he met in Stanford University in 1995. Brin is a son of a professor just like Page is. Larry Page grew up around computers and science magazines which inspired him to attend University of Michigan where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Computer Engineering. He later attended Stanford University to study computer engineering but did not complete his PhD.
Brin and page created an algorithm for a computer task. It was like a search engine such as "Hot Bot." That was the beginning of creating the well known search engine called "Google." As of today, Google has billions of users per day. This was all done during his school experience.
Personal Life
[edit | edit source]Larry Page’s parents are Carl and Gloria Page, they are computer science professors in Michigan. His parents were the main reason why Larry page became fascinated with science and computers.
Larry attended the University of Michigan where he got an undergraduate degree in engineering. He was concentrated in computer engineering.
One of his first jobs was at Advanced Management Systems in Washington, DC.
Lawrence Page is married to a research scientist after the name of Lucina Southworth and they have two children.
Career
[edit | edit source]Larry page along with Sergey Brin launched a company in 1998 called “Google”. He came CEO of Google as of August 2001. The name “Google” was named after a math term “Googol”. Googol is a math term which means 10 to the 100th power (1 followed by 100 zeros.) Google is the world’s leading search engine. Millions of users are using Google to search up the simplest and even the most complex things. Along with Google are products like Gmail, Google Maps, Google Translate, etc. The year of 2005 was a very productive year for Google. Maps and IGoogle were released and Youtube was under Google since 2005.
Larry Page and Sergey Brin own about 16 percent of Google's stock.
Page and Brin ran Google until 2001. They hired a Chairman and CEO called Eric Schmidt. However, Page was going to replace Eric with himself in 2011.
An article mentions that "John Jay Iselin, the Foundation's president, congratulated the two men for "their invention that has fundamentally changed the way information is retrieved today."" [1]
Google was probably one of the best inventions.
Accomplishments/Successes
[edit | edit source]Larry Page was among the Top 100 innovators in the world under the age of 35 in 2002 in MIT Technology Review. He is also the most successful entrepreneurs who laid foundation for a venture that has improved the internet and its abilities. In 2001, Google earned Best Image Search Engine, Best Design, Best Search Feature at the Search Engine Watch and the Most Webmaster Friendly Search Engine. Google by far is one of the best search engines out there. In 2011, Page was ranked the 11th richest person in the United States. In 2013, Larry Page was number 13 on the “Forbes 400” list of the richest people in America.
Along with these accomplishments, Larry Page was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2004.
Larry Page and Sergey Brin were named "Persons of the Week" by ABC World News Tonight in 2004.
