[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]- (rare) ρωδάκινο n (rodákino) supported by an alternative etymology.
Etymology
[edit]- Inherited from Byzantine Greek ῥοδάκινον (rhodákinon) from Late Koine Greek or medieval δωράκινον (dōrákinon) (with antimetathesis of [d] [r] and vowel change [u>o]) or δωρακινόν μῆλον (dōrakinón mêlon). From Latin duracinum. [1][2]
- The medieval alternative spelling ῥωδάκινον (rhōdákinon) leads other etymologists[3] to support the preservation of ⟨ω⟩ even in modern times.
- Other names: Ancient Greek μῆλον περσικόν (mêlon persikón) & Latin mālum persicum, both meaning 'Persian apple'.
