Etymology

From Pali calācala (literally “shaking and unshaking; moving and unmoving; etc”), from cala (“shaking; moving; etc”) + acala (“unshaking; unmoving; etc”); or from Sanskrit चलाचल (calācala, idem), from चल (cala, idem) + अचल (acala, idem); possibly via Old Khmer ចលាចល (calācala, “social unrest; social instability”); equivalent to Thai จล (jol) +‎ อจล. Cognate with Modern Khmer ចលាចល (caʼlaacɑl).
