Etymology 1

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 곶〮 (Yale: kwóc), but today with nominal suffix (-i) attached.

Today synchronically analyzable as 꽂— (kkot-, to skewer) +‎ (-i, noun-deriving suffix).

Compare Japanese (kushi, skewer), of uncertain relation.
