Mistaken reconstruction - final vowel in OJP is ⟨o₁⟩

[edit]

The page is currently at simə, which would appear in OJP as ⟨simo₂⟩. However, texts show instead that this was ⟨simo₁⟩, which would have to be from Proto-Japonic simo instead. See also the KDJ entry here at Kotobank, or MYS 20.4431 with the spelling 志毛 (simo₁). Since book 20 is Eastern Old Japanese, see also the Western Old Japanese in MYS 15.3699 with the spelling 之毛 (simo₁).

I propose that we fix the reconstruction and consequently move this page to Reconstruction:Proto-Japonic/simo. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 00:10, 16 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, @Kwékwlos, for the move! 😄 ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 01:05, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Just know that the contrast of o1 and o2 was lost after the Kojiki. @Eirikr Chuterix (talk) 18:10, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
We also have a citation from the Harima Fudoki, dated as completed in roughly 715, recording the phonetic spelling 志毛 (⟨simo₁⟩). See also NKD at Kotobank: https://kotobank.jp/word/%E9%9C%9C-155966. So far as I'm aware, the Harima Fudoki maintains the ⟨mo₁⟩ / ⟨mo₂⟩ distinction. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 01:50, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
