The sub- prefix in English subtitle is because the captioning in English programming is usually along the bottom of the screen. I'm curious if the fel- prefix in Hungarian felirat is an indication that captioning in Hungarian programming was originally (or maybe still is) along the top of the screen? ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 18:12, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Eirikr I don’t think so. I think it’s because fel- can mean (up)on the surface of something or onto this surface (position or direction). The insertion of subtitles may have been viewed as writing “on(to)” the picture. Note that in Hungarian “in the picture” is képen (literally on the picture).
