    From Middle High German zeichen, from Old High German zeihhan (sign, symbol), from Proto-Germanic *taikną, *taiknaz (sign), from Proto-Indo-European *deyḱ- (to show). Cognate with Dutch teken, English token, Danish tegn, Swedish tecken.
