From Middle High German beschīnen, from Old High German biskīnan, from Proto-West Germanic *biskīnan, from Proto-Germanic *biskīnaną. Equivalent to be- +‎ scheinen. Cognates include Dutch beschijnen, English beshine and Gothic 𐌱𐌹𐍃𐌺𐌴𐌹𐌽𐌰𐌽 (biskeinan).
