From Middle High German spalten (strong verb), from Old High German spaltan, ultimately from or related to Proto-West Germanic *spilþijan (to destroy, spoil, ruin).[1] Cognate with English spald (to split), Danish spalte (to split), Norwegian Bokmål spalte (to split), Swedish spalta (to split).
