this compatibility was removed from the core here: adafruit/circuitpython#10193

In addition to removing the old API compatibility I changed some of the type annotations to use strings instead of imported classes in order to avoid the circular import issue, so this also resolves: #161

Looks good to me. Also, Good usage on reducing the imports.
