The Portenta Max Carrier does not have built-in cellular capability but includes a Mini PCIe slot (J8) that allows for the integration of optional 4G modules with GNSS capabilities. This slot supports USB, I2C and USIM interfaces, allowing the system to add cellular connectivity and GNSS functionality. Users can install a compatible 4G module to provide cellular connectivity.

The Mini PCIe interface on the Portenta Max Carrier is optimized for integrating cellular and GNSS modules, supporting multiple communication protocols and power management features. It enables IoT, remote monitoring and edge computing applications with reliable connectivity. An external power source of 6V to 36V is required to use the Mini PCIe slot.

Compatible modules include the Arduino Pro 4G Module (EMEA / GNSS Global), which provides LTE Cat.4 speeds of up to 150 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload.
