Fossa castrensis[1] sive doga[2] sive douva[3] est fossae genus quod circum castra mediaevalia vel oppida plerumque adhibitum est defendendi causa. In nonnullis locis hae fossae evolverunt in defensas aquaticas extensivas, quae includebant lacus artificiales, moles, et cataphractas. In castellis autem recentioribus, fossae modo ornamenta aedificii erant.
