Placenta cake is a dish from ancient Greece and Rome consisting of many dough layers interspersed with a mixture of cheese and honey and flavored with bay leaves, baked and then covered in honey. The dessert is mentioned in classical texts such as the Greek poems of Archestratos and Antiphanes, as well as the De agri cultura of Cato the Elder. It is often seen as the predecessor of baklava and börek.

The Mars ocean theory states that nearly a third of the surface of Mars was covered by an ocean of liquid water early in the planet's geologic history. This primordial ocean, dubbed Paleo-Ocean or Oceanus Borealis (/oʊˈsiːənəs ˌbɒriˈælɪs/ oh-SEE-ə-nəs BORR-ee-AL-iss), would have filled the basin Vastitas Borealis in the northern hemisphere, a region that lies 4–5 km (2.5–3 miles) below the mean planetary elevation, at a time period of approximately 4.1–3.8 billion years ago. Evidence for this ocean includes geographic features resembling ancient shorelines, and the chemical properties of the Martian soil and atmosphere

The eighth named storm of the 2020–21 European windstorm season, Filomena formed over the Atlantic Ocean close to the Canary Islands on 7 January, subsequently taking a slow track north-eastwards towards the Iberian Peninsula and then eastwards across the Mediterranean Sea.

Ala al-Din Ali (January 1353 – August 1380) was the third Sultan of the Eretnids ruling from 1366 until his death. He inherited the throne at a very early age and was removed from administrative matters. He was characterized as particularly keen on personal pleasures, which later discredited his authority. During his rule, emirs under the Eretnids enjoyed considerable autonomy, and the state continued to shrink as neighboring powers captured several towns.

The United States government illegally seized the Black Hills – a mountain range in the US states of South Dakota and Wyoming – from the Sioux Nation in 1876. The land was pledged to the Sioux Nation in the Treaty of Fort Laramie, but a few years later the United States illegally seized the land and nullified the treaty with the Indian Appropriations Bill of 1876, without the tribe's consent. That bill "denied the Sioux all further appropriation and treaty-guaranteed annuities" until they gave up the Black Hills. A Supreme Court case was ruled in favor of the Sioux in 1980. As of 2011, the court's award was worth over $1 billion, but the Sioux have outstanding issues with the ruling and have not collected the funds.

Syrian literature is modern fiction written or orally performed in Arabic by writers from Syria since the independence of the Syrian Arab Republic in 1946. It is part of the historically and geographically wider Arabic literature. The modern states of Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel as well as the Palestinian autonomous areas only came into being in the mid-20th century. Therefore, Syrian literature has since been referred to by literary scholarship as the national literature of the Syrian Arab Republic, as well as the works created in Arabic by Syrian writers in the diaspora. This literature has been influenced by the country's political history, the literature of other Arabic-speaking countries and, especially in its early days, by French literature.

The March Revolution in Berlin was one of the European revolutions of the 1848-1849 period and a core event of the German freedom and national movement. After oppositional public assemblies in Berlin demanded civil liberties from the Prussian monarchy, the military took action against them from March 13, 1848. These clashes escalated into barricade fights on March 18 and 19, which claimed several hundred lives. King Frederick William IV was finally forced to withdraw the military from Berlin and make political concessions to the demonstrators. By summer, there was a temporary liberalization: a liberal March government was appointed and a freely elected National Assembly began to draft a constitution for Prussia. However, the disunity of the revolutionary forces enabled the king to withdraw most of the concessions from 1849 onwards.

  2. An internationally significant topic covered by reliable sources in multiple languages from Sweden, the UK, Finland, and South Africa. A Swedish topic without a Swedish-language article. Dugan Murphy (talk) 02:37, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Per the nominator, this is a featured article on the English Wikipedia about an interesting topic. The article is short enough that I don't foresee any problems in translating it. I don't find the oppose at all convincing, as this nomination isn't just proposing that the article be translated "back" into Swedish (even though there's no Swedish article in the first place), but into other languages as well. While a Swedish editor might be able to find additional sources, that has no bearing on whether the article is worth translating, which this is. Epicgenius (talk) 18:33, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Per the nominator. Article now created in Swedish. There are several sources in English.--Paracel63 (talk) 12:40, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  1. @Qwirkle: The article was originally written in English, so I don't understand why you would think it's "semi-translated from Swedish". Anyway, I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem for a Swedish Wikipedian to translate it or even add information to it, considering they would be able to check the available sources and maybe even find some more. --Brunnaiz (talk) 09:56, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If this were a conversation off wikipedia, among people unfamiliar with how wiki operates, this might be, or at least seem like, a reasonable point. Anyone on the inside should realize that the text of the article is like the tip of the iceberg, and just like a berg, the portion hidden from direct sight can have titanic consequences.
How many of the cites are in English? How many of them are from actual experts? How many of them are self-promoting press release regurgitation?
What other cites might an actual Swede in actual Sweden see from a different perspective from the article? Qwirkle (talk) 16:26, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  1. I won't vote on the nom, but I'll just note for the record that I've already translated the article back to Swedish yesterday. Draken Bowser (talk) 11:54, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Draken Bowser: Thank you! Tack! -- Brunnaiz (talk) 00:22, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  2. @Qwirkle: Are you suggesting there are no wiki editors in Sweden interested in this topic? Don't assume bad faith.--Paracel63 (talk) 12:40, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am unable to see how you could get to this idea from what I wrote above.
That said, perhaps you should instead ask yourself why the article turned up in English first?
Writing an article where the overwhelming majority of participants will be unable to readily check the sourcing and look for alternative sourcing is a bad idea if one is counting on peer review, which Wikipedia likes to pretend it does. Qwirkle (talk) 15:04, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So Translation of the Week can only take English as a base, only using English-language sources? And are the amount of available sources in English lacking? Your mileage may vary on this one, it seems. Paracel63 (talk) 14:51, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  3. @Mastrocom: This article recently went through the rigorous featured article nomination process, which vetted all the sources. For instance, it was determined that the article's use of Facebook meets en:WP:ABOUTSELF. Does knowing that change your opinion on this nomination? Dugan Murphy (talk) 12:20, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Dugan Murphy absolutely it doesn't. I don't care what happens in other wikies. In my wiki Facebook is not reliable Mastrocom </> void ClickToInbox(); 13:00, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Open chattel slavery existed in the region of Palestine until the 20th-century. The slave trade to Ottoman Palestine officially stopped in the 1870s, when the last slave ship is registered to have arrived, after which slavery appeared to have gradually diminished to a marginal phenomena in the census of 1905. However, the former slaves and their children still continued to work for their former enslavers, and were reported to still live in a state of de facto servitude in the 1930s. Many members of the Black Palestinians minority are descendants of the former slaves.

Nordic identity in Estonia refers to the concept that Estonia is, or ought to be considered, one of the Nordic countries. The current mainstream view outside of Estonia does not usually include Estonia among Nordic countries, but categorizing it as a Nordic or Northern European country is common in Estonia.

Television in Ethiopia was introduced in 1962 with the government owned ETV. Color television started in 1979 on an experiment basis with regular transmissions starting in 1984 to commemorate the founding of Workers' Party of Ethiopia (WPE). Ethiopia got its first private television broadcaster in 2008 with EBS TV, a US based satellite TV channel mostly focused on infotainment.

Until very recently there was only one private station with most of the stations being state owned. However, emphasis on liberalization of the TV market eventually led to a wave of privately owned stations coming about recent years. In 2014 the Oromo diaspora launched the one and only television; Oromia Media Network, based in US OMN. In 2016 and 2017, more private broadcasters such as the news centered ENN TV and others like LTV Ethiopia, Kana TV, EOTC TV all joined the market. Dimtsi Weyane and were launched at the end 2018. 7 million households in Ethiopia has at least one television set and about 55 percent of the population has access to the watch television in their homes.

Chinglish is slang for spoken or written English language that is either influenced by a Chinese language, or is poorly translated. In Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong and Guangxi, the term "Chinglish" refers mainly to Cantonese-influenced English. This term is commonly applied to ungrammatical or nonsensical English in Chinese contexts, and may have pejorative or deprecating connotations. Other terms used to describe the phenomenon include "Chinese English", "China English", "Engrish" and "Sinicized English". The degree to which a Chinese variety of English exists or can be considered legitimate is still up for debate.
