La Maddalena (A Madalèna, Sa Madalèna) is a town and comune (municipality) in the Province of Sassari in Sardinia, Italy. As of 2016, 11,246 people lived there.[2] Its area is 52.01 km². It is 19 meters above sea level. Defined by many as one of the most spectacular archipelagos in the Mediterranean is that of La Maddalena, one of the most popular tourist destinations for both national and international tourists.[3]
The first inhabitants of the islands in modern times were Corsican shepherds who crossed the dangerous Strait of Bonifacio with their herds, in search of pasture that was not subject to taxation or competition from cropping farmers. When the 1720 Treaty of The Hague assigned Sardinia to the House of Savoy, the Maddalena archipelago was simply forgotten, and the islands' uncertain territorial status made them a smugglers' paradise.
The Maddalena islands are only 20 minutes by ferry from the Sardinian port of Palau, and geologically connected to the pink granite rockscapes of Gallura in the north-east of Sardinia.
