The arrondissement of Foix is an arrondissement of France. It is part of the Ariège département. Its capital, and the prefecture of the department, is the city of Foix.
History
[change | change source]When the Ariège department was created on 17 February 1800, the arrondissement of Foix was part of that original department.[2]
Geography
[change | change source]The arrondissement of Foix has the Pamiers arrondissement to the north, the Aude department to the east, the Pyrénées-Orientales department to the southeast, Andorra to the south, Spain to the southwest and the Saint-Girons arrondissement to the west.
It is the largest of the arrondissements of the department, with an area of 2,077.8 km2 (802 sq mi),[3] but it is the second in population, after Pamiers, with 51,473 inhabitants and a density of 24.8 inhabitants/km².[4]
