J. R. Dunn in Cohen (1989) recognized four subfamilies—the Gadiculinae (monotypic), Microgadinae (monotypic), Eleginae (five genera), and Gadinae (five genera). [cited from J. Nelson: Cohen, D. M. Teletchea et al. propose a revised provisional classification of Gadidae (21 genera) distributed into four subfamilies: the Gadinae (12 genera), the Lotinae (3 genera), the Gaidropsarinae (3 genera), and the Phycinae (3 genera).
