When the Autobots recaptured the Ark from Shockwave, the reprogrammed Guardian attacked them and, unable to defeat them, was set to explode in their midst. Swoop carried Guardian off into the distance shortly before it detonated. But Swoop was unable to escape the blast radius, and was apparently destroyed. The Wrath of Grimlock!
Unbeknownst to the Autobots, Swoop survived, but was knocked offline and crashed into Lake Dena, an artificial reservoir set among the mountains of northern Oregon, containing no fish. He was found by the brilliant Professor Morris, when he was fishing in the fish-free Lake Dena. He didn't catch any fish — there are no fish in Lake Dena — but he got quite a shock when he latched onto Swoop's inert form and hauled it to shore. The Icarus Theory
