Ghosts of Yesterday
Construction began on the High Arctic Base soon after the Ice Man's discovery, and never really stopped. The Ghost 1 project also began there, and a launch date was set for July 16, 1969, to intentionally coincide with the Apollo 11 launch in Florida. As the launch date approached, Walter Simmons had Staff Sergeant Martin and his squad of rangers sent to the base under the guise of a training exercise, so they would be conveniently ready in case of trouble. Also, plans were made to move the Ice Man from the base to a new facility in Nevada. The Russians, who had gotten wind of the existence of the Ice Man, sent KGB agent Sergei Tasarov to infiltrate the base.
Though the Ghost 1 launch was successful, contact was lost with the craft a short time into the voyage. After contact was re-established using an alien transmitter, Kinnear left the base with the Ice Man convoy, placing Nolan in charge in his absence. Tasarov caused the convoy to crash, leading Nolan to leave the Arctic base as well. With Smythe in charge, the base continued to communicate with the Ghost 1 until its destruction.
Following the relocation of the Ice Man, the Arctic base was decommissioned and dismantled. Ghosts of Yesterday
