Talk:Retool
From Transformers Wiki
Do we want to move this article to "Remold"? a number of sites have a link to "Remold", and that seems to be the more common term. --FortMax 06:06, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
- I would prefer retool. --ItsWalky 06:26, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
- I just realized how dumb my reply was, since this article was mine to begin with. YEAH I AGREE WITH ME. HOORAY. --ItsWalky 06:26, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
- Retool is the terminology used by the people who actually make the toys, and hence much preferable in my mind. We should, of course, have a redirect from remold to retool, and a note (once it's no longer a stub) that sometimes people say remold instead. --Steve-o 19:04, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Retool vs. new mold
Should we make a more explicit distinction between "retool" as in "permanently altering an existing tooling" and "new mold" as in "creating new molds for some parts"? 2007 Movie Premium Leader Optimus Prime, for example, clearly had a new injection mold made for the new head, the sword and the roof panel above the head in truck mode. They're all molded in the same blue plastic color (the roof panel was molded in red on original Leader Prime, but painted over in red on Premium Prime).
Final Battle Jazz presumable also uses a new mold for the new parts, since a) Target Allspark Jazz and Premium Jazz prove the tooling still exists without the molded battle damage and b) neither of those came with Final Battle Jazz's weapon, so presumably Hasbro can't cast the weapon without also creating a battle damaged head and legs. (I guess there's at least two new plastic injection molds at work there, one for the hips, shins/knees, head and weapon and one for the missile and the scarred visor, and I guess the windows/roof part is also doubled on the same mold.)
Actual modified tooling is usually what's done for permanent running changes, such as 2007 Deluxe Concept Camaro Bumblebee's molded eye pupils and added hip panel tabs, or Deluxe Jazz's shortened arm joints. Does Hasbro clearly distinguish between the two processes in terms of terminology?--Nevermore 06:07, 3 July 2009 (EDT)
- There should probably be a section about the technical distinction, but the reality is that we often don't know when a tool has been altered vs. copied-with-alteration, and as far as the fandom (and the wiki) is concerned the 'retool' seems to refer to "an altered version of a pre-existing mold" irrespective of whether it's the original mold, a new mold based on that... or anything involving tools and dies at all. It has a slang or shorthand meaning which, I think, is more important than the technical meaning it started with. -Derik 06:13, 3 July 2009 (EDT)
- Rewrote most of the article. How's that?--Nevermore 09:11, 3 July 2009 (EDT)
I question the necessity of the monster list. --M Sipher 14:46, 3 July 2009 (EDT)
- Well, before, it was a G1-only list with a "this is missing stuff" tag. I though either give it a complete list, or something else entirely. But not a sorta-complete one-line-only list.--Nevermore 17:48, 3 July 2009 (EDT)
- I'm planning on removing all of those tables at the end, unless there is a consensus to leave them. It might be useful for this page to have comparison/contrast pictures for several notable examples from each paragraph. Any thoughts? --Khajidha 15:53, 2 February 2011 (EST)
What was retooled
Putting this here as I'm not sure where would be best. Many toy descriptions say that "such and such is a retool of so and so", but do not give any idea of what was changed. Sometimes the picture makes it easy to see, but sometimes there's no picture. Shouldn't we try to explain what was changed? Khajidha 14:32, 6 February 2010 (EST)
Wildrider
How is Gentei Wildrider retooled from Classics Rodimus? --Poweredconvoy 22:47, 18 April 2010 (EDT)
Is it technically a "retool" in the case of gang-molded alternate parts?
Since Hasbro never actually changed the tooling? - Starfield 22:51, 22 August 2010 (EDT)
- Technically, no. In the sense the word has taken on in the fandom, yes. The ambiguity is (I think, and definitely should be) covered in the article. --Khajidha 08:58, 23 August 2010 (EDT)
"Redecoes"
It's worth noting that currently, nearly any redeco such as the market-six minicons or Legends Sandstorm have been retooled to include a (?) size class code of something.Hida Atarasi 19:02, 15 February 2011 (EST)
Classics Sunstreaker and Sideswipe
I beleive were released at the same time, though I dont know for sure. They are the same mold (except for the head, but they transform differently. One is essentiall the other with the head and hands facing the other way. I dont know what catergory this fits under, but its definately worth mentioning. Even if one is a retool of the other, they transform differently, just because they can, rather than because the new mold required it.24.67.59.249 15:46, 14 July 2011 (EDT)
- They are already mentioned in the write ups for those toys. Just for general information, they would fall under the listing of "Gang molded alternate parts" if we were to put them on this page. This page is just a general overview, it is not necessary to list every occurrence of retooling in the line. --Khajidha 16:20, 14 July 2011 (EDT)
