Assemblies of God Church Nigeria, was born out of a desire to experience Pentecost. Rev. Augustus Asonye who was the father of Pentecost in Assemblies of God Nigeria spoke in tongues before the movement and was prepared by God to be used to lead the entire congregation into the baptism of the Holy Spirit. As the group yearned for the Pentecostal experience of speaking in tongues, they were greatly dissatisfied with their stay at Faith Tabernacle and after they were expelled, the group started meeting at Nwoji Compound in Umuecheokwu village in Old Umuahia while another group met at the Aggrey rd. apartment of his Senior Cousin Elder Augustus Ehurie-iwe Wogu and as they waited on the Lord for the baptism of the Holy Ghost, after three days the Lord through prophecies spoke that they should send for his servant Asonye who He has prepared for this task. Asonye was sent for and he arrived by train to the meeting. As soon as he started preaching the fire of the Holy Ghost fell and the first man to speak in tongues was his own younger brother Elder Marcus Asonye known as Mr. Pentecost. Rev. Augustus Asonye was marked by his ability to lead people into the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
