Associate Editors
Silvia Centeno, PhD
Research Scientist, Metropolitan Musuem of Art
New York, NY, USA
Silvia A. Centeno’s work focuses on the analysis and characterization of artistic materials, techniques, and deterioration processes in paintings, photographs, and works of art on paper, parchment, and other supports. Using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence, NMR techniques, and various forms of microscopy, she investigates both the original materials and methods used by artists as well as how these materials change and degrade over time. The technical information uncovered helps understand artists' working methods and ensure proper preservation of the Met's collection. This research provides crucial insights that inform conservation treatments, exhibition decisions, potential acquisitions, and loan considerations.
