The design brief of this project is to: Redesign the interior of a selected room to solve a problem Create a portfolio due by the D/M/Year Create a scale model of the redesigned selected room by the D/M/Year Hand in drawings and mood boards with the project by the D/M/Year Design Situation

This gives a background to the problem you are trying to solve. It tells what the problem is, where it is, who it affects etc.

Identification of the Need Basic Example


The object of this portfolio is to decorate the interior of a selected house to suit a target audience. A portfolio must be completed to show the planning of the design process, and a scale model, mood board and drawings need to be created to show the audience what the final project will look like. The room I will be redesigning is my living room and adjoined dining room.

Exploration of the Need Basic Example


I am redesigning this room as it is the largest area at the back of the house and possibilities are endless because my house will actually be renovated and although the new structure is already set, my project may have some input for the interior design and furniture objects and placement. The room is currently cluttered, the furniture is mismatched and placed in positions that do not suit it, and it contains a room to a laundry and adjoining toilet which means there is less space. The new living room/dining room I will create needs to suit the target audience of my family-2 adults and 4 children aged 6, 11, 13 and 15.

The structure of the living/dining room is designed by an architect to be L-shaped, with an included deck in the south-east corner of the old living/dining/laundry area if south is the front of the house and north is towards the backyard. These features of the architectural building must stay the same, as the laundry and whole back area is being demolished and rebuilt with an additional floor on top, and I am only able to redesign the room that was originally planned by the architect. Criteria for Success


Criteria for Success A list of criteria that must be achieved by your final design.

Basic Example
The criteria for success are a list of objectives that I hope to have completed to the best of my abilities when I finish the project. This can include goals I hope to achieve, levels of quality that I must meet and reasons why that goal is important. Aesthetic Quality Aesthetic quality is important to the client as they want to improve their home interior to make it look better than it is. If the room doesnt jump out at them and look good then they wont want to use the interior designers plans. This means the furniture and wall/floor items should match or be in a similar style, the room should have light coming into it, and the room should look and be comfortable. Safety All objects in the room must be designed to be safe otherwise the future home could injure the client and for legal reasons, could cause a law suit. This means that the inside of the house needs to be designed so that there are no lights dangling by thin pieces of string, but instead they have been tightly secured into place. It does not stop the interior designer from creating an extravagant design; it just requires me, as the designer, to think about how I am designing and positioning objects and makes me think how they will be secured and if it is safer somewhere else. Correct Measurements/Dimensions The measurements used in drawings need to be correct otherwise the future builders will create a room that is too small or too large, and the furniture in the room might be out of proportion and will not fit in the room. Measurements could be checked to ensure that the final product will be accurate; otherwise the designer will try to place things in a non-existent space. Finance The finance of the interior design project depends on how much the client is willing to spend on modifying their home. They could be prepared to renovate the whole house and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on each room, or they could just be looking for a couple pieces of furniture to buy to add to the room, or even just move items around for better positioning and a better use of space. The designer usually asks the client for an estimate of how much they would like to spend and are willing to spend. Function Each piece of furniture or positioning of an object or architectural feature should be explained by the interior designer of why they put it there. This is because they should position things for a reason, mainly for a better function. For example, if a client wanted more space and had many objects they would be asking the designer for compacted storage spaces to put their items in. The designer would usually create a room with a function, whether for eating, leisure or sleeping, but decorations that have no function and are just for looking at can be placed in a room to add aesthetic quality.

Legalities Architectural buildings must be put through to the local council to get approval otherwise the client might get fined. Interior decorating usually doesnt need approval unless change to the structure of the house is planned. However, as long as the designer doesnt take someone elses design and calls it their own then there is not much of a legal problem for the client. Environment During the actual construction and decoration of the chosen room, the designer should try to make sure that the renovation taking place is environmentally friendly, and the client can tell the builder to reuse items or sell degradable objects or flooring/wall construction items so they can be re-used in another project. We all should try to keep the environment healthy by not wasting materials being used to build with and recycling our construction waste. The environment can also include how the building is positioned to the sun, as if it is a double storey building it might shadow the garden to stop things growing or shadow and give no sunlight to the neighbours, although this is mainly looked at in architectural design. Materials Depending on the finance of the renovation, the designer will be able to use materials from all around the world to create a lovely room with function and aesthetic qualities. Materials can be used for floors, walls, ceilings, windows and doors, furniture and item decorations. Positioning It is important for things to be positioned in a flowing way in a room, so people walking in and out do not disturb others in the room and are not stuck at a dead end with nowhere to go. Also, if things are positioned in corners and against walls it makes the room look bigger, and has a larger open space. The designer also has to take care to make sure that items of furniture do not block doorways, the windows, or things that need to be accessible to people. Space There needs to be space in a room otherwise it will appear cluttered and messy. Also if everything is crammed into one room the aesthetical look appears overdone. Spacious rooms make the area look larger than it actually is, and more space means a larger room to move around in and do things in. This also enables a larger number of people in one room. Techniques The interior designer must draw the structure of the house and where they plan to place objects, so I must have certain skills that I can use to draw the plans with. Different tools and items can also be used as a technique to make the room have a better wow factor. I hope to achieve or use these criteria throughout my project, as they are necessary elements of a good interior design. This is also what I will use to evaluate my success at the end of my project, and see if I have followed the things I said are important. Limitations
Limitations This is a detailed description of factors, which will have a direct influence on your project. These include time, facilities materials, experience, equipment etc...

Basic Example
Limitations are things that hinder or stop me from completing my project. They can either be material limitations or just limitations that occur in everyday life. They can include: Time Time is a limitation because there are only so many lessons that I have at school to work on my portfolio and practical side of this project. *shortened lessons *Year 10 Tests This timetable shows that I will miss 6 lessons due to public holidays and staff development days, and 5 days will be shortened somehow when I have Design and Technology that day. This means a great loss of time which will impact on me learning skills or completing my project and portfolio. This will result in me needing to spend time at home completing it and making sure I use my time efficiently and work hard so I dont have too much to do at home. Finance The limitation for the designer is what to put in a room because it depends greatly on finance, which is what the client is willing to pay for items of furniture and the redecorating of their house. Luckily, as I am redecorating the renovated version of my house, I am designing the interior for my family, my clients. My dad will be paying for it, and after renovating the entire house he plans to spend money on good quality furniture, however, only around $5000 will be allocated to the furniture in the dining/living room. The walls, windows, doors, ceilings and floor cost, however, should hopefully not be over $5000$10,000 otherwise it will be too much money. Therefore, I have to keep in mind my price budget when finding items to redecorate the chosen room with. Materials The materials used in the actual construction of the house are mostly a limitation for the builder, which has an effect on the client, and of course, finance if the materials are expensive or being imported from somewhere else. However, the materials the designer plans to use in their mood and sample boards and also in the model is their limitation. As the designer, I do not want to spend too much money buying sample materials, but as there is a good chance some of my designs will be used it is okay for me to spend a little money to find materials. The limitation will mostly be being able to find a small piece of material or samples that I can use, because I do not want to buy metres of carpet just to cut out a small piece for my model and presentation boards. Skill I am limited in skill as I have never done interior designing before except in my own room and house, and as I am more of a person that believes in cheap and long lasting things rather than aesthetical quality if I have to pay for it, I believe I dont have much skill. However, since this project is about using samples and hopefully most of the materials are cheap to build just a model I will be able to redesign and make an aesthetically pleasing room and improve my skill as an interior designer. My limited skill will have an impact on time, which will also have an overall impact on my project design. Knowledge I have a little bit of knowledge about how architectural structure of the house is important as my family have had our architect friend design the structure of the house with ideas about what we could do with it. In this case, as we are not sure where we are actually going to put items I am able to design and decorate the interior of the house without copyright infringements, but if I start to design the living room and realise I cant change the interior much or it was another family members idea then I can either quote the person who thought of the idea or change the room I am designing and design a bedroom instead. I also have a little bit of knowledge about how colour schemes, the placing of furniture and a theme throughout the house can be important, learnt from class lessons, and also I now know how to draw a basic plan. This will be useful when designing the interior of my house. Experience

I have experience about knowing how colours can go together and have figured out what happens when colours clash, the example being made out of mismatched clothes. However I have found that it is easy to match clothes together and it will hopefully be easy to have a theme and matching colours/furniture throughout the house as long as I have the materials and money able to buy or make it. I also have a bit of drawing experience from class, but I can still learn and do a lot more about interior design. Space Space in the room I am designing is a small issue, as my family and I live in a small house but are renovating to make it look better. However, we like a small cosy house and will have no problem with empty space as 6 people can have a lot of items which means I will need to create storage space. The space in my classroom is large enough for people to create drawings and make models in, so space is not that much of an issue, but the space in my chosen room will need to be large enough to move around in like at school. Aesthetic Eye As my eye creates aesthetic images that I want to see, my eye and my planning mind may not be good enough to design the interior of my living/dining room by myself, so I must interview family members to get an overall opinion of what should be included. This impacts on time, and also impacts on the final result of the room as it may look completely different to what I originally wanted it to look like, as it had to incorporate ideas from other family members.
