Acid Content in Beverages Lab

I. Introduction (10%) QUESTION: The question should pertain to the acid concentration in one or more of the beverages. HYPOTHESIS: The hypothesis should directly answer this question with some reasoning. EQUIPMENT: A full equipment list should be included Procedure (20%) OUTLINE: A stepwise outline of the procedure should be completed based upon the NaOH standardization lab. SKETCH: Draw a simple sketch of the apparatus used to complete this experiment. All equipment and solutions should be clearly labelled and choice of indicator must be addressed. SAFETY: Three safety precautions specific to the chemicals and equipment used in this lab must be identified and described. Data Collection (30%) EXPERIMENT LOG: A detailed account of the steps taken, specific measurements, and observations within the experiment. Highlight/underline important events that may affect the quality of data obtained in the lab. DATA TABLE: Data pairs for the pH vs. volume NaOH added should be included in the lab report. Observations for changes to the solution color should be included as appropriate. GRAPH: A graph of pH vs. volume NaOH added should be included for each beverage titrated. Analysis (20%) 1. Write a balanced chemical equation for the neutralization of each primary acid found in the beverage(s) tested. 2. Calculate the molar concentrations of the acid in the beverage(s) tested. Show all work and include units. 3. Share your data with 3 other lab groups. Comment on ways that the data is similar or different. What are possible reasons for variations in the data? 4. Calculate the pH of the beverage(s) based on your titration data. Compare this to the measured pH and comment on similarities or differences. Post Lab Assessment (20%) 1. Suppose a student chose to measure solution volumes using beakers. How might this affect the number of significant figures in the final acid concentration? 2. Some beverages may yield a titration curve with multiple equivalence points. Explain why this would occur. 3. Create a diagram that shows the molecular interaction between the acid and base as the titration proceeds. Display this at four points along a titration curve: (a) when 0 mL of base is added, (b) when 5 mL of base is added, (c) at the equivalence point, and (d) when an excess of base has been added, and provide an explanation for what is happening at the molecular level. Tip: Display at least five molecules (or dissociated ion pairs) of the acid in each diagram. 4. After conducting this lab, what recommendations would you make for a person with acid-reflux disease or tooth decay? Justify your recommendations based on your lab data.
