An operational amplifier, or op-amp, is a device with two input terminals and one output terminal used to amplify signals. It operates using two DC supply voltages and can function in either differential or common mode. Differential mode applies signals to each input separately, while common mode applies equal signals to both inputs. An op-amp's ability to reject common mode signals is measured by its common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR).

Aguirre, Daniel M. ECE103 B21 1. What is an Op-Amp? An Op-Amp is a short term for operational amplifier.

. It has two input terminals, the inverting (-) input and the no inverting (+) input, and one output terminal. Most Op-Amps are operating with two DC supply voltages, a positive side and a negative side. Usually, these supply voltages are left in the schematic diagram because it is understood to be there. 2. What are the different modes of an Op-Amp? Explain each a.) Differential Mode in this mode, either one signal is applied to an input with the other input grounded or two opposite-polarity signals are applied to the inputs. When an Op-Amp is operated in the single-ended differential mode, one input is grounded and a signal voltage is applied to the other input. b.) Common Mode in this mode, two signal voltages of the same phase, frequency, and amplitude are applied to the two inputs. When equal input signals are applied to both inputs, they tend to cancel, resulting in a zero output voltage. 3. What is CMRR? Common-Mode Rejection Ration (CMRR) is the parameter that is use to measure an amplifiers ability to reject common-mode signals. It can also be represented by the equation: Aol/Acm.
