Introduction to Structural Analysis

Any *i+il engineering structure is concei+ed ,ee&ing in !ind its intended use- the !aterials a+aila.le- cost and aesthetic considerations. The analysis o% structure in+ol+es a great +ariety o% structures li,e- .ea!s- colu!ns- %ra!es- shells- &lates- arches etc. This is a .roader classi%ication. In a .road sense- the design o% structure consists o% two &arts/ the %irst &art deals with the deter!ination o% %orces at any &oint or !e!.er o% the gi+e structure and the second &art deals with the selection and design o% suita.le sections to resist these %orces. The %irst &art can .e ter!ed as 0structural analysis1 and the second &art as 0&ro&ortioning10di!ensioning1 or si!&ly 0designing1 o% !e!.ers. 2e%ore starting the analysis- we shall re3uire the entire details o% the structure- its geo!etry- constraints- loading and sectional &ro&erties. 4%ten- a%ter analysis- the designers ha+e to read5ust their initial di!ensions in order to get the desired res&onse %ro! the structure. The &ur&ose o% structural analysis is to deter!ine the reactions- internal %orces- such as a6ial- shear .ending and torsional- and de%or!ations at any &oint o% a gi+en structure caused .y the a&&lied loads and %orces.

What is STAAD.Pro ?
STAAD.Pro is a general &ur&ose &rogra! %or &er%or!ing the analysis and design o% a wide +ariety o% ty&es o% structures. The .asic three acti+ities which are to .e carried out to achie+e that goal - a7 !odel generation .7 the calculations to o.tain the analytical results c7 result +eri%ication - are all %acilitated .y tools contained in the &rogra!8s gra&hical en+iron!ent. STAAD.Pro %eatures a user inter%ace- +isuali#ation tools- analysis and design engines with ad+anced %inite ele!ent and dyna!ic analysis ca&a.ilities. In STAAD.Pro there are two !ethods %or .uilding a !odel and assigning the structure data which are using the co!!and %iles and using the gra&hical !odel generation !ode or gra&hical user inter%ace 9G:I7. STAAD.Pro also su&&orts o+er $( internation codes o% Structural design including the Indian Standard *odes. The designing o% sections are carried out using di%%erent codes de&ending on the location and &ractice STAAD.Pro &ro+ides .oth static as well as dyna!ic or ti!e history anlaysis load co!.inations and en+elo&es to &er%or! the re3uired analysis. 4ne a&&lication o% Dyna!ic analysis is the Seis!ic analysis o% Structural !e!.ers. The Indian Standard codes IS-';<3 &ro+ides %ull s&eci%ication o% Seis!ic Analysis including )oad *ases*o!.ination etc. This code is already &ro+ided in STAAD.Pro 4n the whole STAAD.Pro in+ol+es Design- =odeling- Pre Analysis- Post AnalysisGra&hical In&ut and 4ut&ut Syste!- Design > "e&ort Generation o% Structural Details.
