Mechanical Vibrations Question

This document contains two homework questions from an undergraduate mechanical vibrations course. The first question involves calculating the total and steady-state response of a 0.5kg mass attached to a 450N/m spring excited by a 10 cos(10t) N force. The second question involves plotting the magnification of a 2kg mass attached to a 4000 N/m spring and 36 N.s/m damper and modifying a property to reduce the response at 5 rad/s excitation.

ME 429 MECHANICAL VIBRATIONS FALL 2006 HOMEWORK 2 Only one of the two questions will be graded!

Prepared by : Gnay Orbay (B-175) Due date : 17.10.2006 (the beginning of the lecture)

1. Consider the system shown on the figure with a mass of 0.5kg and spring of 450N/m. The system is excited with a sinusoidal force F (t ) = 10. cos(10.t ) N with initial conditions
y (0) = 0 & (0) = 0 y

F (t ) y (t )
m

a. Write the general expression of the total solution of the response y (t ) when the system is exposed to the forcing shown, afterwards apply the initial conditions. Estimate maximum deflection by plotting the result not by solving troublesome trigonometric equations.

b. Assume that after a long time the transient vibration (the harmonic solution of equation of motion) died out somehow. Find the steady-state (particular solution) response. Calculate maximum deflection of the mass. 2. The system shown in the figure has following properties:

m = 2kg k = 4000 N / m c = 36 N .s / m
a. Plot the magnification of the system and find its maximum value and at which frequency it reached that value.

F (t ) y (t )
k
m c

b. If the excitation frequency is 5 rad/s, changing which property, except mass, would be the best thing to do in order to reduce the steady-state response amplitude of the system? Create a sample modified system as you decide then plot the vibration amplitude X vs. excitation frequency in a range of 0 rad/s to 150 rad/s for the modified and non-modified system on the same graph.
