How to fix Code 39 error with DVD/CD-ROM drives in Windows XP or Vista

I was fixing a computer the other day and ran across the following error in Device Manager on the CD-ROM drive. "Windows cannot oad the device driver for this hardware! "he driver #a$ %e corr&'ted or #issin(! )Code 39*" Because of this error the drive did not show up in My Computer and the customer was una!le to !urn CDs or read any CDs. I uninstalled the drive from Device Manager re!ooted the computer and the pro!lem remained so o!viously it appeared to !e a registry issue that I would have to solve. If you are receiving this Code "# error and your CD or D$D drive is missing and has a yellow exclamation mar% in Device Manager I hope this information is useful. &o solve this Code "# error follow these instructions' +O",- (fter removing these registry %eys and re!ooting it may !e necessary to reinstall any CD or D$D recording applications. )* Close all open programs +* Clic% on ,tart Run and type R-.-DI& and press -nter "* Clic% on the plus signs /0* next to the following folders 12-345OC(54M(C1I6,3,&-M CurrentControl,et Control Class 78D"9-#9:--"+:-))C--B;C)-<=<<+B-)<")=>

8* &his folder is the D$D?CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. 5oo% for any of the following names in the right hand column. @pper;ilters 5ower;ilters @pper;ilters.!a% 5ower;ilters.!a%

:* If any of the a!ove %eys shown in step 8 are listed right-clic% on them and choose Delete 9* (fter deleting the %eys close the Registry -ditor A* Re!oot your computer =* Open My Computer and chec% to see if your CD or D$D drives have returned. 3ou may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or D$D drive is gone.
