Running ANOVA in Excel 2011

Instructions for Mac Users



1. Copy and paste a continuous variable and a categorical variable
(containing the groups you want to compare) into a new sheet.
2. Go to Data ! Sort and sort by the categorical variable.
3. Title a new column with the first category name and copy all of the
continuous data from that category into it.
4. Copy the data from each of the other categories into the adjacent
columns.
5. Look for any missing data and
remove any null cells.
6. Open StatPlus and go to
Statistics ! Analysis of
Variance (ANOVA) ! One-Way ANOVA (simple)
7. Click the box to the right of the Variables field, which will take you
back to Excel.
8. Highlight the category columns and go back to StatPlus. Since the
columns included titles, keep the Labels in first row box checked.
9. Hit OK and the output will pop up in a new window. It contains the
means, variances, and counts for each group, along with a complete
ANOVA table (including the F-statistic and p-value).
10. If the p-value were less than 0.05, you would reject the null hypothesis
that the means of all categories are equal. If the p-value were greater
than 0.05, then you would fail to reject.
