Geotechnical Report Final
Geotechnical Report Final
The soil condition of the proposed area on 1604 and Lou Mell dr in San Antonio was
investigated by Geotechnical Company called Alpha Testing. The company has performed both
the field test and laboratory tests. This report presents the result of the subsurface exploration
and foundation recommendation for the proposed drive-in cinema multiplex.
Field test
The field test was performed by drilling eight borings to a maximum depth of 20ft below the
existing ground. During the sampling procedure, penetration test was performed in the borings
to acquire the standard penetration value (N). The standard penetration value is the number of
blows of 140 lb. hammer falling from a distance of 30in to penetrate 6in, up to 18in. by adding
the second and third 6in increment the N value is determined. The subsurface materials were
sampled using a 2in O.D the split-barrel sampler (ASTM 1586) and the soil borings were
performed with a drilling rig equipped with a rotary head. Also conventional solid stem
continuous augers were used to advance the holes. The purpose of this test is to provide an
indication of the relative density of different materials in the soil such as sand and gravel. There
for the relative strength of the compressibility of the soil could be determined. Water level
observation were conducted during the boring operation. However, Groundwater was not
encountered in borings at the time of drilling. During the field test, field logs were used to
record information of indications of the presence of material, groundwater observation, sample
attempted and recovered. The location of the boring and the results of the field exploration (log
book) are on page 5&11 of this report.
Laboratory test
The laboratory test was conducted to investigate additional engineering characteristics of the
soil. The content of each sample was classified and determined by a geotechnical engineer. All
phases of the laboratory testing were conducted according to the ASTM specifications.

The natural water content of the sample as well as the Atterberg limits test was performed to
determine the plasticity index. It is the amount of water a soil need to be in a boundary called
the plastic limit, liquid limit, and shrinkage limit. The boundary then can be defined based on
change in soil behavior. To evaluate the engineering characteristics of the subsurface materials,
the following number of tests were performed.

Atterberg Limits
During the laboratory investigation, the soil samples were considered dry. Based on the fact
that ground water was not encountered during boring and the information on past projects in
the area, Ground water is not a major concern during construction. This investigation does not
include any environmental assessment for the presence or absence of wetlands and hazardous
or toxic materials in the soil, surface water, ground water or air. The engineering properties of
the underlying soils for the selected soil samples are as follows.

The results of this investigation indicates that the underlain shallow soil on the site has very low
expansion potential Due to the presence of limestone 2ft below the surface of the ground. The
estimated vertical movement is up to 11/2 in on the surface of the ground. This value was
estimated in accordance with the Texas department of transportation (TXDOT) Tex-124-E and
engineering judgment.
Foundation Recommendations
The report of the field and laboratory tests of the subsurface material is considered enough to
make a foundation selection decision for the two story restaurant building and the screen wall.
Based on the results slab on grade is recommended for the building part of the project and
continuous spread footing for the screen wall. This types of footings are cost effective because
very little soil will be removed, and it is easier to execute.
Selective materials are going to be needed for structural fill of the screen part of the project.
Clayey sand (SC), lean clay with gravel (CL), or clayey gravel (GC) are among recommended.
They should have a Liquid limit of 35 percent and plasticity index (PI) between 5 and 20. Trench
backfill for utilities should be placed and compacted in accordance with the city of San Antonio
standards. The selective material should be compacted 95 percent of the maximum dry density
and within (+/-) 2 percent optimum moisture content. (TXDOT-113-E).
The soil should be graded away from the structure so that the rain water does not accumulate
inside the foundation. If not the water will make the soil to expand and swell.
Recommended Foundation type in picture
The allowable bearing capacity of the soil, the dimensions of the foundation, and the depth of
the foundation will be determine after all the considered loads applied to the structure. Floor
slabs can be designed using the following parameters which are published based on the criteria
of wire reinforcing institute (WRI), and post-tension institute (PTI).
