CEMS Technologies: Dilution Extractive Dilution Extractive

There are two main types of CEMS systems described - full extractive and dilution extractive. The full extractive system continuously draws a sample through a heated filter and sample line to a condenser which removes moisture before sending the dry gas to individual analyzers. The dilution extractive system dilutes the sample gas with dry air to reduce condensation problems without using a condenser, and analyzes the diluted sample at near-ambient concentration ranges. Advantages and disadvantages of each system are provided.

CEMS Technologies

Full Extractive System

A sample is continuously drawn from the gas stream through a heated filter head, which
removes particulate, sent through a heated sample line to a condenser. The condenser
removes moisture from the sample by lowering the gas dew-point. The dry gas is then sent to
individual analyzers to be evaluated.

Dilution Extractive System

Dilution-extractive systems are extractive systems that dilute the sample gas with dry contaminationfree dilution air to a level below the dew point of the diluted flue gas to eliminate condensation
problems in the CEM system (in lieu of using a moisture condenser).
The diluted sample is analyzed by pollutant and CO monitors operating at or near ambient

concentration ranges.
