3 02h Bits Bytes and Data Rates

Network data rates are measured in bits, bytes, kilobits, kilobytes, megabits, megabytes, gigabits, and gigabytes per second. The document defines the relationships between these units of measurement and provides examples of how to calculate download times for a file using different connection speeds.

3.02h Bits and Bytes & Data Rates

Note: In data communication, one Kilobyte (kB) equals 1000 bytes. This is in contrast to the
binary system in which one kilobyte equals 1024 bytes.
Part 1 Fill in the Blank
Network Data Rates
1 byte = 8 bit
1 kbit/second (kbps) = 1000 bit/second (bps)
1 Mbit/second (Mbps)= 1000000 bits/second (bps)
1 Gbit/second (Gbps) = 1000000000 bits/second (bps)
1 Mbit/second (Mbps) = 1000 kbit/second (kbps)
1 Gbit/second (Gbps)= 1000000 kbit/second (kbps)
1 Gbit/second (Gbps)= 1000Mbit/second (Mbps)
1 kB/second (KBps)= 8000 byte/second
1 MB/second (MBps) =8000000 byte/second
1 GB/second (GBps)= 8000000000 byte/second
1 TB/second =8000000000000 byte/second
Part 2 Calculate Download
Bandwidth is measured in data per second and it is measured in bits.
Web pages, music and video files are measured in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes.
Calculate download speeds of various items.
How long will it take to download a 10 MB file using each of the three data rates listed?
10 MB file
DSL service 2.94 Mbps Download speed
2.721 seconds
Cable Company 20 Mbps Download speed
0.4 seconds
FiOS Service 29 Mbps Download speed

0.276 seconds
