XSHEET Command
Use the XSHEET command if you have surfaces (or DTMs) in Terramodel and wish to cut
cross section sheets.
You will need:
1. Horizontal Alignment (HAL) in the Plan view.
2. Xlines or cross section locations along the HAL.
3. At least one DTM (layer with 3D points).

Step 1: Create a HAL


If you do not have a line (pline or set) across the DTM (could be a centerline) then you need to create one.
1. From the Draw menu, select Pline then Line
2. Draw a line across the DTM.

Step 2: Define Xlines


XLINES are cross section lines which are simply polylines with special properties that enable Terramodel to automatically
associate them with a HAL. XLINES are needed to define the stations of the cross sections for viewing and cutting sections.

Create a new layer called Xlines and make it current.


From the Draw menu, select Pline then Xlines.
Select the line defined in Step 1 as the Horizontal alignment.
Click on the Xline button.
Set the Left and Right defaults to define the width of the section. Click OK.
Click Xline again.
Select Hal pts then OK to create xlines at the critical locations along the HAL such as the beginning and ending and at
curve points.
8. Click Xline again.
9. Select Interval and specify the occurrence of xlines such as 50 to place an xline every 50'. Click Xline then Close.

Step 3: Run the XSHEET command

From the Cogo menu, select Streets, then XSheet.


Select the HAL from Step 1.
Select a station range.
Click on Settings.
There are many setting for the final cross section plot. This article will attempt to explain the most important settings.

6. Click on Sheet Properties.


7. Decide what size plots you want and set the Height and Width here. For this example, I'll set the Height to 24 for 24
inches.
8. Set the Width. This is example will use 36.
9. Set the origin for the first sheet in the SHEET view. You may have objects in the sheet view, if so, be sure not to overlap
the cross section sheets with the other data. For this example, I'll place the origin at 100,100.

10. Click OK.


11. Click on Column Properties. This setting controls the size of the columns in each sheet.

12. For this example, we'll have 3 columns of 22" x 10".


13. Set the Column Height. The column height and width must be smaller or equal to the sheet height and width. It is
recommended to be slightly smaller to have a nice margin for the final plot.
14. Set the Column Width.
15. Set the Separation between columns.
16. Set the Maximum number of columns on one sheet.
17. Set the offset for the first column on the sheet.

Click on Axis Labels.


For this example, we will label each cross section rather than the entire column. So I will uncheck all labels here.
Click OK.
Click Grids.
It is up to you to decide if you want grid lines drawn in the columns. Check the boxes as desired.
The Minor grid spacing is the distance between the minor grids in inches (or cm if metric).
The Minor grids/major setting establishes the number of minor grids before it comes to a major grid. In this
example, we'll use 0.2" for the minor grid spacing and 5 for the minor grids/major setting. This means that every
5th grid will be a major grid, so the major grids will be set at 1" since 0.2" x 5 = 1".
Note: Cross sections are drawn at even major grid intervals. In other words, if the major grid spacing comes out
to be 5", and the cross section ends up taking 5.2", then XSHEET will draw the section at 10". Even if the grid
lines are not displayed, XSHEET refers to the major grid distance (1" in this example) to draw the cross sections.
It is a good idea to keep the major grids small.

22. Click on XSection Properties.


23. Set the horizontal scale for the cross sections. It might help to remember the column size to determine a good scale.
Remember, once the cross sections are created, you can always go back and change settings and recreate the cross
sections.
24. Set the vertical scale.
25. The Minimum Separation applies to the separation of the cross sections in the columns.

26. Click on Axis Labels. This is where the labels around the cross sections are set.

Vertical Tick/Label Interval - this is the distance between the elevation labels. 1" is usually a good setting.
Set the Left Vertical Axis settings.
Set the Right Vertical Axis settings.
Set the Bottom Horizontal Axis settings.
Horizontal Tick/Label Interval - this is the distance between the bottom axis labels. 1" is usually a good setting.
Set the Bottom Horizontal Axis settings.

27. Click on Station Label if you want the station labeled for each section.

28. Click OK to the Cross Section Properties.


29. Click on Layers in the XSheet settings.
Set the layers and colors of the linework and labels created by XSHEET. Here is an example:

30. In the Xsheet settings, check Overwrite ALL other XS Sheets for alignment. This will allow you to change the settings
and recreate the cross sections.
31. Close the Xsheet settings.
32. Click OK to the XSHEET command along the bottom of the screen.
33. You should see a list of DTM layers. These are layers that have been previously linked in Terramodel.

NOTE: If you do not see the layer you wish to cut cross sections on in the list, you will have to get out of the
XSHEET command and link the layer with one of the following commands: DTM/Spot elevation or
DTM/Quick profile or DTM/Generate contours after running one of these commands on the DTM layer, the
DTM layer will be listed in the XSHEET command.
34. Once the layer or layers are selected for the cross sections, click OK.

35. The cross section sheets will be created in the Sheet view. Select the Window menu, then Sheet. If you don't like the
look of the sections, run XSHEET again and change the settings.

Note: When you create cross sections using the XSHEET command, the real cross sections are stored in the XSECT view and
dynaviews are created in the SHEET view. If you wish to manually change a cross section, do so in the XSECT view. Any
changes to the sections will be displayed in the dynaviews in the SHEET view.

A useful command for manually changing sections in the XSECT view: Settings/Active Alignment.
