Gold Rush
Pograms
Coffin Ships
In Ireland, a potato famine starting in 1845, and ending in
1855 killed over a million people and caused millions of people to
emigrate. This terrible event happened because of a potato blight,
and the policies of the British.
The potatoes rotted because there was a fungus on the
leaves. This fungus caused the potatoes to have a blight.
The Irish used money made from the potatoes to pay rent
on their homes. The British home-owners got mad
because the Irish could not pay rent. The Irish were
evicted from their homes and some immigrated. When
the potatoes went rotten, the Irish had to eat all of their
farm animals, grass, seaweed, and snails. The lack of food
caused many diseases such as dysentery. Over 1 million
people emigrated, and over 1 million died a slow, painful
death of starvation.
The British had beliefs and political policies that caused them to not help the Irish as much as they
should have. One of them was called laissez faire. It was a policy for the British Government that meant
that they should not interfere with business. For example, a lot of wheat was exported to England, and
that wheat could have saved many lives of starving people. Another policy was divine prejudice. That
was a policy that meant that the British thought it was Gods will. The British didnt interfere because
they thought it was the will of God. Another policy was ethnic prejudice. That was a policy that meant
that the British thought that they were superior to the Irish. The British thought they were superior
because they owned the Irish farmers land.
The Irish emigrated on coffin ships mainly to countries in North America like Canada and the
United States. On the coffin ships, it usually took about four weeks to travel. In these four weeks, many
people got diseases and died. When the Irish immigrated, they were not always welcome in the country
that they traveled to, they competed for jobs with the people living in that country, and they also werent
always welcome because the Irish were Catholic, and the others were Protestant.

ships got their name
because these ships

people. The poor

because of starvation,
sickness, and some of

THE GOLD RUSH
In 1848 to 1882, gold is found in San Francisco,
California and Chinese immigrate to America. The
Americans do not want the Chinese to immigrate to
their country.
The Chinese living in China had very bad conditions
that also caused them to immigrate. A few of the reasons were
that the Chinese government was dishonest and didnt care for
its people, another was that farmers couldnt grow enough
food because they werent given enough land because China
was very highly populated, so they sent their sons to America.
The
Chinese that
were
emigrating to
America also
didnt have
great
conditions.
The boat fares
were too high,
so they had to borrow money from Chinese merchants to
emigrate, and they had to travel about eight weeks to get to
San Francisco.
Not many Chinese immigrants got rich from gold so they
thought of other ways to make money. They built railroads,
but were payed less that half of what the Americans were
payed. The Americans didnt like to do laundry and the
Chinese were smart so they started laundry businesses. The
